The United States Attorney’s Office has announced that Gregory J. Haanstad has taken the oath of office to become the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. Mr. Haanstad was nominated by President Biden on June 6, 2022, and confirmed by the United States Senate on September 13, 2022. He took the oath of office before Chief United States District Judge Pamela Pepper on September 19, 2022.
As United States Attorney, Mr. Haanstad is the top federal law enforcement official in the Eastern District of Wisconsin, which consists of 28 counties and includes the cities of Milwaukee, Kenosha, Racine, and Green Bay. Mr. Haanstad oversees a team of over 80 employees, including 44 attorneys.
The office is responsible for prosecuting federal crimes in the district, including crimes related to terrorism, public corruption, civil rights, child exploitation, firearms, fraud, cybercrime, human trafficking, and narcotics. The office also represents the United States in affirmative and defensive civil litigation and collects debts owed to the United States.
Mr. Haanstad has more than 20 years of experience as a federal prosecutor in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin and has prosecuted a wide variety of criminal cases, including those involving national security, financial fraud, public corruption, hate crimes. , bank robberies, and drug conspiracies. Mr. Haanstad previously served as United States Attorney from 2016 to 2018; Acting United States Attorney from 2015 to 2016; First Assistant United States Attorney from 2010 to 2015; and Deputy Head of the Criminal Division in 2010.
Prior to joining the United States Attorney’s Office, Mr. Haanstad served as a law clerk to United States Magistrate Judge William E. Callahan, Jr., of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin from 2000 to 2002.
