MOUNT VERNON, Va. – A select number of sailors assigned to the Nimitz-class ship USS George Washington (CVN 73), along with the ship’s commanding officer Capt. Brent Gaut, participated in an organized tour of Mount Vernon, George Washington’s family. property, September 14. & # xD;
Among the Sailors selected for the event were several Spirit of Liberty award winners, as well as various crew members who were selected as Sailor of the Quarter and Sailor of the Year. Participants found meaning in different aspects of the trip, with 2nd Grade Internal Communication Specialist Emma Dolata noting that personal responsibility and accountability in Washington stood out to her.

“He was proud and took great care of his home even after all the great things he did,” she said, touching on the fact that farming and ranching are close to Washington’s heart. “Anyone could have done it for him but he woke up every morning to tend his garden and walk the land.”

Gaut was impressed by the work of the Mount Vernon Women’s Association, a group of women who saved the property from destruction in the mid-19th century, and the organization that manages the property to this day.
