The United States is, and will continue to be, a global leader in international humanitarian response, including refugee resettlement. We have prioritized rebuilding and strengthening the US Refugee Readmission Program (USRAP) in a strategic, sustainable manner that puts the program on a permanent footing for the future and modernizes the program to respond to evolving needs and opportunities. This includes efforts to expand opportunities for Americans to become directly involved in resettlement, including through a private sponsorship pilot program that we will launch later this year.
In the past fiscal year, we also took steps to increase USRAP resettlement of members of particularly vulnerable populations, including refugees from the Americas, Congolese, Syrian, Ukrainian, Burmese and many other nationalities, as well as LGBTQI+ people, while providing additional initial support to resettle more than 80,000 Afghans in communities across the United States—our largest resettlement effort in 40 years.
Yesterday, the Department of State, along with the Departments of Homeland Security (DHS) and Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS), referred the President’s Report to Congress on Proposed Refugee Admissions for Fiscal Year 2023 to the House and Senate Judiciary Committees.
The report recommends to Congress a refugee admissions goal of 125,000 for fiscal year 2023 to address the growing needs caused by humanitarian crises around the world, including more than 100 million displaced people worldwide.
Next, together with DHS and HHS, the Secretary will consult with Congress on the President’s proposed FY 2023 Refugee Admissions Order.
Through America’s refugee resettlement program, our government, civil society and private sector partners, state and local officials, and Americans in communities across the country demonstrate our nation’s generosity and core values every day. The United States will continue to provide safe haven and opportunity to the world’s most vulnerable.
The report to Congress will be posted on the State Department website.
