A peaceful, stable, prosperous and cooperative Arctic region is of vital strategic importance to the United States and a priority for Secretary Blinken. As one of the eight Arctic nations, the United States has long been committed to protecting our national security and economic interests in the region, combating climate change, fostering sustainable development and investment, and promoting cooperation with the Arctic United States, Allies, and partners. In order to advance American interests and cooperation with Allies and partners in the Arctic, and after extensive consultation with Members of Congress, local and federal government officials, and external stakeholders, the President intends to elevate the position of Arctic Coordinator through appoint a Grand Ambassador. for the Arctic Region, subject to the advice and consent of Parliament.
The Ambassador-at-Large for the Arctic Region will promote US policy in the Arctic, engage with counterparts in Arctic and non-Arctic nations as well as indigenous groups, and work closely with domestic stakeholders, including state, local governments and Tribal, businesses, academic institutions, non-profit organizations, other agencies of the federal government and Congress. The United States remains committed to constructive cooperation in the Arctic, primarily through the Arctic Council, and the Ambassador-at-Large will work in close partnership with the United States Senior Arctic Officer, the federal Arctic science community, and Arctic Executive Steering Committee.
