The United States is deeply concerned about renewed threats of violent conflict in Tripoli and calls for an immediate de-escalation by all parties. The vast majority of Libyans seek to choose their leadership through peaceful elections. We call on those who risk being dragged into violence again to lay down their arms and we especially call on the Libyan leaders to immediately recommit to establishing a constitutional basis for presidential and parliamentary elections. The ongoing instability is a reminder of the urgent need to appoint a new UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya to continue mediation efforts, with the unified support of the international community. The United States will reinforce our calls for calm and a renewed commitment to elections during the August 30 UN Security Council briefing and consultation on Libya.
