Post-apocalypse settings are all the rage, and Ubisoft capitalized on that with Tom Clancy’s The Division in 2016. The game introduced a world ravaged by a pandemic and put players in control of special agents who were activated to regain control of Manhattan. The sequel then brought the agents to Washington D.C. The upcoming mobile title The Division will also take place in these locations, further expanding the events of the main titles.
Tom Clancy’s The Division has created an interesting version of the United States that will likely be explored further in the third text. However, there is much more to the world than a few cities in the United States. This pandemic has also affected other parts of the planet, and Ubisoft’s series should explore what it looks like.
The Division Has Spent Two Games in the United States
The Division introduced players to Manhattan decimated by a viral pandemic known as The Dollar Flu. This disease spread through New York on Black Friday and left the city in ruins. The US quickly quarantined its major cities, and agents working for The Division were activated to restore order. In Manhattan, these agents learned more about this pandemic and discovered a plot to decimate the human race.
The second game of the division brought the agents to Washington D.C. where they set up shop in the White House and headed across town to beat up the gangs that had taken over the streets. It even allowed players to return to New York City in the “Warlords of New York” expansion that followed the events of the two games.
A mobile game set in the world of Tom Clancy’s The Division is coming out, as well as a spin-off title known as Heartland. Both of these games appear to be set in the United States, with the mobile game apparently expanding on the events of the two main games, although little is known about Heartland other than the fact that it will be free-to-play. There’s no news of a third main entry, but the success of the first two will likely lead to The Division 3.
It is Time to See What the Rest of the World Looks Like
There is a whole world that is also affected by the virus pandemic. Even if the disease did not spread to all countries, the sudden ten of the United States government would have repercussions for the world economy. Not only that, other countries would certainly take advantage of the destruction of the United States. These are the events that should be shown in the second title of Tom Clancy’s The Division, as they would expand the knowledge of the universe.
The Division hasn’t shown players what the rest of the world looks like, but a series of collectible audio known as the Langley Report in Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 fills in some of the gaps. Other countries such as Japan and members of the European Union have weathered the storm, but are suffering from a lack of resources due to the collapse of their trading partners.
Much of the world outside of the United States also seems to be collapsing in Tom Clancy’s The Division, and players should be sent to help stabilize these regions. Allowing players to see this stabilization effort around the world would further build The Division’s world and give players more unique post-pandemic locales to explore.
