Chicago-area black belt taking off for Maccabiah Games
The world’s biggest Jewish athletic competition is about to begin, and a young Highland Park black belt will be part of the action.
HIGHLAND PARK, Illinois — A suburban high school student is representing the United States at the world’s third-largest sporting event. On the same subject : DC wants to significantly improve its video game production.
Julia Kerpel is from Highland Park and is representing the US at the Maccabiah Games in Israel.
Karate chops run in the family. Not only is Julia a black belt, but so is her mother and grandmother.

Julia is part of the nine-member US Junior Karate delegation.
“I like to think I’ve won just by being there, but I can’t lie and say I don’t want to be on the podium,” she said.
Julia leaves for the games on the 4th of July.
