PHOENIX (Stacker) – It’s that time of year again when the cold air is biting, and life is all about family and friends. Some people may have already started (or even finished) their Christmas shopping. Others may have already started planning their holiday gatherings – travel included. Hollywood may be able to offer some inspiration as you finalize your holiday plans. Whether it’s taking a magical journey into a snow-covered village or spending time with unexpected company in quaint little towns, a few favorite films come to mind.
Bounce investigated films that take place during the holidays, which include travel as a significant element, and highlighted 10 of the best. All films had to have at least a 6.5 on IMDb with over 10,000 user votes to be eligible. Read on for some travel-inspired holiday movies. Get ready for some holiday fun.
Carol (2015)
In this romantic film adapted from the 1952 novel “The Price of Salt,” written by Patricia Highsmith, a lesbian romance unfolds in New York City. One day while doing some last minute holiday shopping, New York City shop girl and aspiring set designer Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) meets a sophisticated older woman named Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett). Although Therese and Carol have men in their lives, they struggle to live up to the conservative expectations of 1950s society as they explore their deep connection to each other.
The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw described the film as “extremely detailed and furnished,” whisking viewers into a luxurious past of all coffee women, train carriages and record players. “Carol” received many nominations for cinematography, costume design, hair and makeup. She also won the Rooney Mara award for Best Supporting Actress at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015.
Elf (2003)
In this Christmas comedy, a human baby crawls into one of Santa’s toy sacks, but St. Nick realizes that until he reaches the North Pole. Santa and the elves decide to keep the baby, naming him Buddy (Will Ferrell).
As time passes, Buddy becomes knowledgeable in the elven way of life but is unaware of his human origins until he overhears his eleven peers discussing his unique characteristics. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
People don’t generally consider the Harry Potter movies to be “holiday movies,” but several make the cut — including “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Once Bob (Demián Bichir) starts playing “Silent Night” on the piano, as Maj. Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson) and Gen. Sandy Smithers (Bruce Dern) eat around the fireplace with blankets on their knees, he begins to eat. felt a bit like Christmas – albeit ominously.
The film won the Academy Award for Best Score and the BAFTA Award for Best Original Score.
The Holiday (2006)
In the romantic comedy “The Holiday”, two women who meet online find themselves equally unlucky in love and agree to swap homes for the holidays. Amanda Woods (Cameron Diaz), an active businesswoman in the film industry who lives in Los Angeles, will soon exchange locations with society columnist Iris Simpkins, who lives in a cozy stone cottage in the English countryside.
The change of scenery is positive for both women, not only in terms of romantic possibilities but also in terms of pure beauty. Iris’s cottage is decorated in shabby chic fashion, complete with ivy and a freestanding tub, while Amanda’s is a two-story dream full of bougainvillea. Viewers will be itching for views to book the next flight across the Atlantic. The film won the Teen Choice Award in 2007 for Choice Movie: Chick Flick.
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)
In “Home Alone 2,” 10-year-old Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) and his family are supposed to take a Christmas trip to Florida, but Kevin gets lost at the airport and ends up getting on the wrong plane over – to New York. With his father’s credit card and wallet in tow, Kevin books a luxury hotel room in Manhattan, complete with a huge bed and an extra-large sundae.
It sounds like a perfect holiday until he gets kicked out of the hotel and has to face the same thieves he faced in the first installment. “Home Alone 2” takes Kevin across many sights in New York, including Radio City Music Hall, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, and even Santa Claus on stilts outside the Empire Diner .
In Bruges (2008)
In this thriller comedy-drama, murderers Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson) travel to Bruges in Belgium around Christmas to hide out after a failed murder. Ray, full of guilt about his crime boss’s first job, wants to leave Bruges, while Ken sees the trip as a mini-vacation.
The film treats viewers to beautiful locations in Bruges, including the Market Square and Belfry (which appears on the UNESCO World Heritage list) and Relais Bourgondisch Cruyce, the boutique hotel where the killers are staying. The film received several awards, including the BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay.
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)
In this slapstick comedy film, everything seems to go wrong for the Griswold family as they prepare for their holiday celebration. Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) is determined to have a fun and traditional family Christmas with his wife Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo) and two children, but having both sets of illegitimacy and Clark’s grumpy uncle and cozy aunt complicate things things.
With collapsing floors, collapsing ladders, a moment where Clark has to swerve the car to avoid a collision with a snowplow and an epic sledding scene super powered by “silicone-based kitchen grease non-caloric” experimental, viewers will enjoy more. than a little laugh. Scenes from the Griswold home were filmed in Los Angeles, with the majority of outdoor scenes filmed in Breckenridge, Colorado.
Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987)
In this comedy film, easily frustrated Neal Page (Steve Martin) tries to get home to Chicago to spend Thanksgiving with his wife Susan (Laila Robins) and children. But of course, everything that can go wrong does.
The heavy snow in Chicago causes Neal’s flight to be diverted to a city in Kansas. With the hotels already booked, he has no choice but to share a room with Del Griffith (John Candy), the friendly, amiable, eccentric traveling salesman. The two go on adventures while viewers are treated to homey small-town settings, including the classic gazebo in the middle of the square.
The Polar Express (2004)
In this animated film based on the popular book by Chris Van Allsburg, a young boy goes on an adventurous journey, leaving on Christmas Eve. The boy is traveling by train from his hometown, Grand Rapids, Michigan, to the North Pole. Along with other children, he has a literal song and dance from the waiters and cooks, which ends with a cup of hot chocolate; views of the otherworldly northern lights shimmering high above; and, of course, the majestic North Pole.
Once the train stops, the conductor informs the children about the elves gathered in the magical city and how Santa Claus is waiting for them to give them presents. Grand gestures despite the film’s message – that true Christmas lies in one’s heart – is one that will leave viewers reaching for their loved ones.
