Thousands of flights have been canceled Thursday as the United States prepares for a winter storm expected to hit a large swath of the country.

It also happens to be one of the busiest travel days of the season.

More than 370 flights into, out of, and across the United States have been delayed as of 1 a.m. ET Friday, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. Almost 2,562 have been cancelled, the data shows.

On Thursday, more than 10,028 flights into, out of and across the United States were delayed and nearly 2,539 were canceled.

Southwest Airlines had the most disruptions of the major US carriers, with 22% of its flights canceled and another 44% delayed as of midnight.

About 54 million passengers are expected to depart from US airports during the Christmas and New Year holiday period. Thursday and Friday are expected to be the busiest travel days of the year-end holiday period, with 3.34 million passengers scheduled to fly out each day, according to travel app Hopper.

Forecasters have predicted that the severe weather, consisting of heavy snow, ice, flooding and high winds, is expected to hit various parts of the United States from the Plains and Midwest to the East Coast as soon as Thursday. It is expected to last through Saturday with a wave of arctic air.

Southwest, American, United and Delta Air Lines have already issued travel waivers for various parts of the country in the event that a traveler’s flight is disrupted. This means that the change fee and any difference in fare for certain flights affected by bad weather will be waived by the airline.

FlightAware spokeswoman Kathleen Bangs said the 2021 travel season has the highest number of cancellations, over 5%, in the past decade. That was “partly due to bad weather, including a major Pacific Northwest storm — but primarily due to high absenteeism of airline and airport workers from the widespread COVID-19 omicron variant,” she said.
