(CNN) – Seven years ago, American Libby Green was traveling with her mother in Italy and France, ending her trip with a visit to the southern Mediterranean resort town of Nice before flying back to the US.
Meanwhile, German Marcel Gnauk and a friend were also in Nice, attending the Crossover Festival, a celebration of eclectic music.
Walking along the city’s waterfront Promenade des Anglais, Marcel saw Libby wielding a Hasselblad, a traditional medium-format film camera, and couldn’t resist approaching her.
“I love old cameras Hasselblad, this is amazing,” he remembers telling her.
The pair chatted about the camera and travel, and he invited her to the music festival that night. The next day, Libby flew back to the US, but they kept in touch.
Less than a month later, Libby traveled to Italy, and she and Marcel, who was working in Switzerland, were reunited.
“That’s when I think we knew, okay, this is something special, something serious,” says Libby.
In 2022, Libby and Marcel recorded sounds at Bangkok’s historic railway station.
Marcel then visited Libby in Los Angeles, where she was working in the film industry after studying film, and they traveled together for a few weeks in California.
By now, they knew they wanted to be together and travel the world.
So Marcel returned to Switzerland, Libby stayed in LA, working for another five months to save money.
They bought a campervan and in January 2015 Marcel met Libby at the Zurich airport.
“In less than a year, we quit our jobs and sold basically everything we owned,” says Libby. They then spent four months traveling around Europe. A campervan trip to Japan followed, then a trip to Bali, Taiwan, Cambodia and Malaysia.
In the years since their passion has grown, not just for each other, but for a world of sound, recorded with their state-of-the-art microphones and shared on their social media.
The couple turned a practical matter of recording sound for a travel video they were doing in Cambodia into a full-time business supporting their digital nomad life. But it took some time before they discovered their calling.
‘Everything became alive’

Libby is skilled at using a camera. But they struggled to find a focus.
“There were Libby and Marcel trying to be food bloggers,” recalls Libby.
“It was a disaster,” adds Marcel. “But it was a good learning experience,” notes Libby.
Then, in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh, Libby filmed some flying pigeons that she wanted to use in a movie. But she couldn’t capture the sound of his wings beating.
They searched the internet, searching sound libraries, but found nothing suitable. So Marcel grabbed a $100 audio recorder and went looking for the sound he needed to record.
He didn’t find any pigeons – but he managed to change the direction of the couple’s future.
Marcel turned on the recorder in a small construction zone where the women were digging gravel, listening through a cheap set of headphones.
He was impressed not only by the sounds of construction, but there were monks chanting and motorcycles passing by, honking their horns.
“It was like the sound was pouring into my head from all sides,” says Marcel. “Everything came alive and from that day until now, I never stopped recording.”
A passion for sound
In the six years since the first recording, Libby and Marcel have captured audio in over 25 countries, mostly in Asia, Europe and North America, spending months at a time in each nation.
They’ve developed a more sophisticated recording setup to encompass stereo, ambisonic and binaural techniques – but still compact enough to suit your traveling lifestyle. To see also : Fine Arts Exhibit features over 200 artists at Ohio State Fair.
That meant investing in state-of-the-art microphones and recorders to fulfill their ongoing passion to share authentic soundscapes from every location.
“We’re documenting the world through sounds,” says Libby. “We’re also trying to be a source of inspiration for others to see sounds in a different way.”
It could be an expensive crush. Typically, high-fidelity recording equipment runs into thousands of dollars for individual microphones and audio recorders. For example, one of their stereo recording kits that includes German-made microphones costs about $8,000.
But for Libby and Marcel it’s not just about equipment. Your goal is to really experience a place through sound.
For example, it took them two days to visit Iceland’s now-famous black sand beach at Solheimasandur. They made the two-hour round-trip hike carrying their gear, spending up to 10 hours a day recording in the wind and hail.
A favorite memory was recording around the iconic wreckage of a US Navy Douglas aircraft that crash-landed on the beach in 1973.
“It was amazing, how it sounds, how metal is cracking in the wind,” says Marcel.
In 2020, the couple moved their mobile recording studio to the coast of Iceland.
Two hundred meters from the derelict aircraft, waves crashed on the black-sand beach.
“The terror of water. This is something you have to experience,” adds Marcel. “If you go there and take a picture and then leave, you’re missing out on a lot.”

Libby records and edits her YouTube videos and manages her website (www.freetousesounds.com). Marcel does most of the sound recording and editing, as well as the social media posts.
Through their website, they offer 500 royalty-free sound libraries. Of these, 145 are free to download.
A passion becomes a business
Marcel says their “a-ha” moment came when he was sitting in front of a computer in 2017.
Libby had added a donation button to their website, and a Hollywood post-production creative donated a few dollars.
“I was like, ‘Oh! We just won three dollars!'” Marcel remembers of his first donation.
It was then that he realized that others shared a passion for sound – and were willing to pay for it.
“We wanted to be an accessible source for all types of people to download sounds,” says Libby.
From the start, Libby and Marcel developed a set of premium sound libraries for purchase, as well as free sounds for download.
And they are still excited to travel to new places and record new sounds.
“It doesn’t feel like work because we’re just loving what we’re doing,” says Marcel.
“I know we’ll still be traveling, still recording sounds in five years,” adds Libby.

As for the downsides of the nomadic lifestyle? Libby and Marcel have no base and are constantly traveling. They struggled through hard times, nearly running out of money.
“When you have a home base, you have a more concrete routine,” says Libby. “For us, it’s always changing, so sometimes it takes more effort, more money.”
“And we have a lot of backlog of sounds,” adds Marcel, referring to his previously unreleased recordings. “It’s more exciting to record, to be in the present than to sit with studio headphones.”
But the couple prefers to work on their own, without outside help.
“We don’t have anyone else but us, it’s just the two of us,” says Libby. “Maybe it’s trust issues, but for us, we know what we can do.”
Where to next
Libby and Marcel recently left South Korea to continue their travels in Malaysia. His next big plan is to travel the Pan-American Highway from Alaska to Ushuaia, towards the southern tip of South America.
“I think going to Antarctica to record sounds would be a dream. ‘Wow, a glacier breaks,'” says a smiling Marcel.
But whether it’s a transcontinental journey, or the frozen wastes of Earth’s southernmost continent, Libby and Marcel’s passion for each other and the sounds they record will always be with them.
And, as Marcel says, “It took us 45 minutes to pack up and be at the next airport.”
