There’s a lot to see there, and the Trumbull County Travel Club is on its way to see as much of it as possible.
In fact, the club has visited every single state in the United States, said its organizer, Peggy Boyd.
Boyd, 74, of Howland, retired from teaching in 2000 and was soon asked to help at the Howland SCOPE Center for the Elderly, where part of her job description was to promote travel for the elderly. .
When Boyd’s husband died some years later, she retired again but soon found that people still wanted to travel, especially with people their own age.
“That’s what we did,” Boyd said – and that’s what the Trumbull County Travel Club is still doing.
The club has 200 registered members between the ages of 38 and 96 from across Trumbull County and out of the county as well, Boyd said. There is no membership fee to join the club.
The group travels mostly by bus because it is accessible to the disabled and easier for the elderly than other modes of transportation, although the club flies occasionally, and recently returned from a trip to Lancaster, Pa., With the Amtrak train, Boyd said.
“It’s a big big world out there,” said Warren club member Catherine Scarlett. “Every place has something different to offer.”
Scarlett, 75, no longer drives long distances, but she and her two siblings are having a “summer of bus trips,” she said. Scarlett said it’s nice to travel by bus, because as a passenger you don’t have to worry about planning, driving or navigating traffic.
“Peggy’s travels are very well planned. We always have a wonderful and experienced bus driver, the coaches are comfortable, and we will never be disappointed, ”said Scarlett. “Sometimes Peggy takes us to an unexpected place because we have the time and she knows it will be of interest to us all.”
The club makes about a day trip each month, along with longer trips. In April, the club went to New Orleans for eight days, Boyd said. Next year, the club is making a week-long trip to Texas, with stops in Nashville and possibly St. Louis.
Boyd does computer research before each trip and contracts with reliable motor coach companies that have been in use for 20 years, she said. She can also rely on her own extensive travel experience by visiting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren across the country. She is especially familiar and loves Dakotas and Vermont.
“I can take (travelers) places that most tourists don’t go to,” Boyd said.
Boyd tells travelers that travel is their vacation, and ensures they get to the places they want to visit.
She said some travelers at the club are married couples, but many are widows or people whose significant others do not want to travel with them – Boyd’s own husband typically did not travel with her, except to Alaska, she said.
As a result of traveling in a group, you make a lot of friends, she said.
During trips, the bus always departs from one pickup point in Howland. When the club flies, travelers go to the airport as a group so no one has to worry about transportation or car parking.
While gas prices have been rising in recent months, Boyd said the group’s travel costs have not been affected thanks to its contracts with motor coach companies, which are good through of the group’s trip in December to Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens in Akron.
“What happens is the bus company or the person I’m booking from, they have to eat up the cost,” Boyd said. She said the cost of travel could increase in 2023 under a new contract.
The club’s August day trip to Grand River Cellar and Rabbit Run Theater in Madison, Ohio, is booked, but there is an opening on the bus for its September trip to the Monument. of United Airlines Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pa.
Scarlett said she and her siblings are looking forward to the club’s three-day October trip, “Halloween in the Hudson River Valley.”
