WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – Vacationers are expected to reach pre-pandemic levels this weekend.
AAA estimates that 47.9 million people will travel this holiday weekend. This is almost an increase of 4% from last year, which means that the travel volume is far from the figures in 2019.
But the big surprise is car travel, which is expected to set a new record with around 42 million people traveling by car. And that despite historically high gas prices.
State troops say they are prepared for the increased traffic.
– We expect a lot of traffic. “We’re going to put out DWI patrols, we’re going to put out roadside checks to look for the drunk drivers,” said New York State Police Officer James O’Callaghan.
O’Callaghan says it’s also a good idea to give yourself more time than usual when traveling in anticipation of extra traffic.
