1. Earlier this season, Tom Brady was asked about parity in the NFL at one of his press conferences. The future Hall of Famer didn’t hold on to what he thought parity really meant.

“I think there’s a lot of bad football from what I watch,” Brady said. “I watch a lot of bad football, a lot of bad quality football; that’s what I see.”

During an appearance on this week’s SI Media Podcast, ESPN’s Troy Aikman also lamented the quality of play in the NFL this season.

The conversation started when I asked the Monday Night Football analyst about the possibility of the NFL allowing future AFC and NFC championship games to be played at neutral venues. Earlier this week, Peter King told Chris Russo on his SiriusXM radio show that he had heard the NFL might be testing the waters with this year’s AFC title game, which will be played at a neutral venue if it involves the Bills, Chiefs or Bengal.

“I wouldn’t like that,” Aikman said, “and there’s a side of me that thinks, well, I’m more of a traditionalist, but there’s a side of me that thinks, gee, if everyone had thought like me I thought we would still be playing a 12 game schedule and things would look very different, but I think as a league we have to be very, very careful.

“I will say, the NFL, they are really good at making a lot of money. They are really good at that. And I don’t give them that. I say good for them and the NFL’s marketing. And we look at the popularity of the sport and of the top 100 shows, 80 of them were NFL games this year. I love all that.

“I would like to see more emphasis on improving the product in the field. I would like to see interest in that as well. It seems like all these decisions are being made to increase revenue, which is great, but then it’s less time on the field for players, and then it’s less time here, and the product starts to erode a little bit, and I think we’ve got to be very, very careful about that and I’ve been saying that for a while.”

When asked to elaborate on the eroding of the product, Aikman said: “I think this is the foundation of the sport. Football is the one sport you can’t play the way you play it. All other sports are allowed to practice and then start playing. In football you don’t have that and so we see that the fundamentals of tackling are not what they once were.”

Aikman added: “There were games we watched, and I won’t say which network had the most on, and I had to ask myself, ‘Is this professional football?’ Bad football was played, and that’s not good.”

You don’t need a high IQ to figure out that Aikman was talking about Amazon Prime and Thursday Night Football. Since for a while it looked like Aikman would land at Amazon to call TNF before signing on to ESPN, I asked him if he was glad he didn’t end up at Amazon given TNF’s poor schedule.

“All I want to say to that, Jimmy, is I’m happy where I am,” said Aikman.

During the podcast, we also discussed Aikman’s first year calling Monday Night Football, his experience in the stadium and on the air during Damar Hamlin’s medical emergency, his thoughts on this weekend’s wild card games, why Tom Brady is still on a high level plays level at 45 years old and more.
