CLEVELAND, Ohio — According to the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission, nine sports competitions scheduled in Greater Cleveland are expected to bring in nearly $17.9 million this year.
They include indoor events like the Dru Joyce Classic, which brings scores of young basketball players, to outdoor competitions like beach rugby. Tennis in the Land, a professional women’s tennis tournament at Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica on the city’s Flats West Bank, will return for its third annual edition.
The commission said it expects an economic impact of $17,875,000 from the nine events.
More than $10 million of the total is expected to come from volleyball events. This month, Cleveland will host more than 450 women’s teams during the Junior Volleyball Association’s Rock ‘N Rumble at the Huntington Convention Center in Cleveland for consecutive weekends which together are expected to raise $6,300,000 for the region. A pair of Nike North Coast volleyball competitions in February and April will also add to the coffers.
January 7-8: Junior Volleyball Association Rock ‘N Rumble (Weekend 1) – $3,150,000
January 14-15: Junior Volleyball Association Rock ‘N Rumble (Weekend 2) – $3,150,000

August: Tennis in the Land – $2,100,000
Since 2000, the sports commission has organized more than 210 events that have provided more than $860 million in economic activity to northeast Ohio. The past year has been a very busy one, with events ranging from boxing to NBA All-Star Weekend and all of its side events.
The $17.8 million does not include revenue collected from visitors arriving for any major professional sports team: Guardians, Cavaliers or Browns. Together, the three play more than 130 games in Cleveland.
