Amazon is reportedly set to unveil a new standalone sports app. The report claims that the major company has discussed plans to create an app so customers can watch live sports directly on the product. A potential development in this direction would make sense given Amazon CEO Andy Jassy’s recent comments about the sports industry.

Jassy sat down with the New York Times last month to discuss a variety of topics. However, his commentary on live sports on Amazon Prime Video certainly attracted attention.

Amazon CEO claims live sports app can drive subscriptions

“Only Thursday Night Football if you look at it,” Jassy said. “People thought it would be 5. This may interest you : Feeling Angry? Scientists Develop More Difficult Video Games Than You Think.6 million viewers. It was more than double. It has a 20% higher viewership in the 18-34 demographic, which is really important to a lot of different voters.”

The executive also claimed that more people are signing up for Prime because of the video content on the streaming service.

Jassy was also specifically asked about the importance of sports rights in the streaming world. “We do a lot more work there,” Jassy said. “I think you will continue to see us investing in sports. Sport is such a unique asset. If you look at the most watched programs every year, sports often take up 75% of those spots. They drive live engagement and drive Prime subscriptions.”

Not yet known if pricing will be affected

If finally released, the app would help highlight the company’s live sports content. As of today, this coverage is currently included in the Amazon Prime Video service.

The potentially bad news for sports fans is that Amazon could decide to create different tiers for certain services. Another possibility for users is that this new application could become an addition to the already existing Prime Video platform. Prime Video currently has contracts to broadcast exclusive Premier League and UEFA Champions League matches in the United Kingdom.
