High school sports fans in Central Texas have plenty to keep them busy the next few weeks as the fall sports seasons shift to a battle to qualify for the next level of competition. With the new UIL athletic districts, some names have changed, but the thrill of competition remains the same. FOOTBALL In high school football, the Harker Heights Knights (3-0) battle alongside the Temple Wildcats (4-0) and are slated to clash Friday at Leo Buckley Stadium, both undefeated in Area 12-6A. Harker Heights finishes its regular season schedule against Copperas Cove (0-3) and Bryan (1-2), teams that are unlikely to compete for a playoff spot in the seven-team 6A district. At Searles Stadium on Friday, the Chaparral Bobcats (0-4), play another Region 11-5A Division 2 opponent on the season, Pflugerville Connally (0-3), in what could be a win the Cats’ first ever football.& #xD; In Region 4-5A, Division 1, the three Killeen teams are in a deadlock in the middle of the standings. Currently, Midlothian is 5-0 in first place, Llyn Belton is 5-1 in second place and Red Oak is 4-1 in third place. Ellison and Shoemaker are each 3-2, tied for fourth and second-last place in the nine-team 5A district. Killeen is 2-3 and locked out of the playoffs by Granbury. All three KISD teams in District 4-5A have three more games, including an Oct. 28 matchup between the Eagles and Gray Wolves at Searles Stadium. VOLLEYBALL In high school volleyball, the action is in the 5A ranks with the Ellison Lady Eagles tied with Lake Belton with an 11-1 record atop District 22-5A." Going into the final week of the regular season, Lake Belton, Ellison, Shoemaker and Chaparral have secured the four playoff spots.
