Providence tops Trinity in title game

The Trinity Lutheran football team hosted Providence in the championship game on Saturday, but it was the Pioneers who could claim the trophy, defeating the Cougars 9-0.

Providence scored six goals in the first half and added three more in the second for the win.

The Cougars finished the season 11-8 overall with two postseason wins over Southwestern (Hanover) and Austin 15-0 overall.

Trinity’s seniors were Samantha Enzinger, Siddha Hall, Emma Myers, Kennedy Royal, Kathryn Whitmore. After this season, Myers now holds the school record for goals in a season (41) and career goals (72).

Providence (15-2) advances to the regional to take on Switzerland.

Crothersville’s Dirk Crater finished 19th at the Hardy Lake Sectional on Saturday to qualify for the regional tournament.

Crater ran 18:04.08. Austin’s Brandon Rice won the meet in 16:06.3.

Crater was one of the top individuals on an unqualified team that advanced to regionals.

The regional meet will be held this Saturday at Blue River Memorial Park in Shelbyville.

The Trinity Lutheran volleyball team competed at the Columbus East Invite on Saturday, and the Cougars went 2-2 in four matches played.

Trinity defeated Evansville North 28-26, 25-20 and Avon 22-25, 26-24, 15-10. They lost to East 25-16, 25-19 and to Bloomington North 25-14, 25-19.

Through four matches, Bailey Tabeling led the team in hitting with 51 kills and Carson Bowling had 33. Addison Darlage served five aces while Tabeling had two.

Bowling had seven blocks, Laura Roeder 27 digs, Darlage 23 digs, and Tabeling 18 digs. Darlage also had 90 assists.

Trinity finishes the regular season at 20-10, and the Cougars will host a sectional this week, playing New Washington on Thursday at 5 p.m.

The Brownstown Central volleyball team is building good momentum into the postseason after a solid showing at the Carmel Invite last Saturday.

The Braves defeated Tri-West 25-21, 25-21 to beat Mt. Vernon 25-9, 20-25, 15-13. The only loss was to Carmel 25-19, 25-19.

Against Tri-West, Kalee Borden led the team with nine kills, Sophie Wischmeier had six and Kera Wischmeier had five. Against Mt.Vernon, Kinzee Dean had two aces and Jaydynn Yeadon had one. Sophie Wischmeier had eight kills, while Borden and Brailey Teipen each had six kills.

And against Carmel, Sophie Wischmeier had seven kills, Borden six and Teipen three. Borden had two aces and Finley Wheeler had one.

The Braves will also host a sectional this week at BCHS. Brownstown’s first game will be Thursday against Mitchell at 5 p.m.

The Seymour junior varsity volleyball team played in the Providence Tournament on Saturday and went 2-2.

The Owls defeated Cathedral 25-22, 25-20 and beat Floyd Central 23-25, 25-23, 17-15. They lost to Silver Creek 22-25, 25-12, 12-15 and to Providence 25-23, 12-25, 13-15.

Through four matches, Maddie Schrader led the team with 31 kills, Norah Campbell had 21 and Emerson Johnson had 20. Johnson and Abby Otte each had 10 aces and Campbell had two. Otte had 80 assists and Jamie Bobb had 41 steals.

The JV team finished the regular season with a record of 22-11.

The varsity will be in Jeffersonville this week for a sectional and will take on Bedford North Lawrence on Thursday.
