University president Anthony Monaco wrote to the Tufts community in an email on Friday about an “alleged anti-Semitic incident” involving members of the club’s sports team while traveling to another school for a match. Tufts and the other school are jointly conducting a formal investigation into the matter. The club’s activities were suspended pending investigation.
“The alleged conduct is appalling and contrary to our values as an institution, and these values don’t stop at the boundaries of our campus,” Monaco wrote in an email. “When a member of our community leaves our campus, he represents each and every one of us. This alleged act diminishes every member of our community. “
According to Monaco, the alleged incident that took place during the Jewish holidays is the result of two years of efforts by the university to “fight anti-Semitism on campus.”
“I want to express my solidarity with our Jewish students, faculty, staff and alumni,” wrote Monaco. “We are committed to creating a community where all members can express their beliefs and identity without fear or intimidation. Each of us has a responsibility to take active steps to ensure that we are building this community. It just doesn’t happen automatically. It requires hard work and thoughtful action. Today we must commit to this effort again. “
