Days after sports betting officially opened in Kansas last week, crowds gathered at the Hollywood Casino to watch the Chiefs in their first game of the season.
The atmosphere was similar to other sports bars – people sat at tables, eating wings and drinking beer – but there was a big difference: people occasionally got up from their seats and placed bets on the game.
Tanner Rome, the casino’s sports betting manager, said he and his team are working to improve the experience of sports fans – such as those who come to watch Chiefs games or races at the neighboring Kansas Speedway – to enjoy themselves.
“We have a nice living room back here,” Rome said. “It has 40-some TVs, lounge chairs, everything. In February when we go to the buffet (which is being built next to the sports library), it will be a sports bar, so you will be in a frenzy of sports fans. “
This situation was what John Robinson was waiting for. Until it became legal in Kansas, Robinson went to Iowa to bet on sports. He said being able to bet on every game makes it fun to watch. Now that he is saving money on gas, he is looking forward to spending his time at the casino watching and gambling.
“I want to see the atmosphere of watching the Chiefs game here,” he said. “You can bet everything during the game, like, who will score first, how many yards [Patrick] Mahomes can throw, so you can do everything live.”
For many watching these games today, the casino felt like an online viewing party with new friends included. Stephanie Fisher did not place bets, but she brought her husband who did. He said that betting during the game has become more fun for him.
“We didn’t have anyone we knew who stayed with us, but it was good because everyone just talked,” he said. “We’ll be here a lot.”
The crowd betting on the Chiefs season-opener was formed long before the game began. Common bets were on the point spread, which is based on the margin of victory; the money line, which adjusts the payout for picking winners based on how big the favorite (or underdog) team is; and top-down, bet on the number of points the two teams will score.
“Anything that’s going to be a good result, you can bet,” Rome said. “So a lot of people are betting on Mahomes to have more of his passing yards, or some running backs to have less or more of his rushing yards. You can do anything, it’s different.”
Hollywood Casino is one of four in the state that offers in-person gambling. Conveniently located across the state line, the casino attracts some of its customers from Missouri where sports betting is still illegal.
Matt Nelson is one of those Missouri residents who drove a short distance to legally gamble in Kansas.
“I’ve been gambling for 15 years and it’s been illegal,” Nelson said. “Like, the way I gamble on the internet is illegal (in Missouri). So it’s good for you to come here and start investing real money.
For Nelson, being able to bet on sports is part of the entertainment. To celebrate his first games of the NFL season, he and his friends came to the casino for a watch party. Nelson placed bets on each game on 45 different TVs that filled the room.
“College football yesterday was a disaster, so we’re hoping to step up today,” Nelson said. “We’ve got Mahomes to throw two touchdowns, [Travis] Kelce to run one in, I’ve got two leading touchdown scorer guys.”
The Chiefs were favored by six points in their game against the Arizona Cardinals. Nelson bet on a total of 55 points, and when the Chiefs won by a score of 44-21, he went home with the win.
