MSG Sports, the parent company of the New York Knicks and Rangers, made a change at the top on Friday. The company announced that Andrew Lustgarten will step down as president and CEO at the end of this year. David Hopkinson, executive vice president and president of team operations, will assume the role of president and chief executive officer effective immediately.
James Dolan, owner of both teams, will continue to oversee operations for the Rangers and Knicks. The company has not appointed a new CEO.
Lustgarten will take a seat on the MSG Sports board of directors on January 1, 2023. He has been with Madison Square Garden for eight years and took over as chairman in 2017. He also served as chairman of MSG Entertainment until March, before leaving that position as well. He helped guide both companies through the pandemic and the spin-off that broke up what was Madison Square Garden Co. in two separate companies.
Lustgarten has long had ties to Dolan and MSG. His father, Marc, was also a high-ranking executive at Cablevision, which owned MSG and the Knicks and Rangers in the Dolan family, before he died in 1999 of pancreatic cancer. Andrew Lustgarten is president of the Lustgarten Foundation, which funds pancreatic cancer research; James Dolan is the vice president.
Hopkinson came to MSG Sports in 2020 after working at Real Madrid and Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.
“Over the past several years, David has worked with Andy and the MSG Sports management team to guide the company through an extremely challenging time,” said Dolan. “David’s leadership helped drive significant financial growth and also helped position the company well for the long term. As we look to the future, I am confident that David’s decade of significant and diverse experience working with global sports franchises makes him the ideal CEO to take advantage of the opportunities ahead.”
MSG Sports has already undergone significant leadership change this year, with several other senior executives leaving the company early in 2022.
MSG Sports was created in 2020 when it was spun off from MSG Entertainment. MSG Sports owns the Knicks and Rangers, while MSG Entertainment owns Madison Square Garden.
