JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – With the announcement of the location for the new sports complex comes some local residents who are a little hesitant about how their streets might look.

At a meeting on Tuesday, August 23, the Jonesboro Advertising and Promotions Commission announced the location for its sports complex. Officials recommended the project be located at Race Street and McClellan Drive.

The announcement has some Race Street residents like Dan Taylor nervous about what the complex could do to traffic.

“Race Street is very busy and Sam’s Club is located here and some other businesses and my front door faces Race Street so I’m familiar with the traffic flow and that’s my concern,” Taylor said.

Taylor lives in the Jonesboro Sunset Gardens apartment complex, which has a lot of senior citizens. She said she’s not anti-sports complex, but just wishes it could be in a different location.

“This is a senior complex, we have an entrance and an exit that goes right onto race street, so that’s a concern for us,” Taylor said.

Others are willing to address the traffic problems the complex could cause and say they think it will be great for children in the community.

“Sounds like a good idea, it could keep kids off the streets and help reduce crime,” said Tammy Clark.

When asked about the traffic problems the complex could cause, the Jonesboro Advertising and Promotions Commission released this statement.

“We are still in the very early stages of due diligence on the properties located on Race Street. Part of that process will include a review of traffic and entry/exit options from all locations around that area. We will obviously be working closely with the city authorities to limit traffic complications with local businesses located in the area.”

The commission said it was too early to say when they might complete the road test or how much it might cost.
