The Dallas Cowboys are in the process of sorting out their quarterback room ahead of the 53-man roster deadline, and it could end Tuesday with just one on the roster. The Cowboys released quarterbacks Cooper Rush and Will Grier, per ESPN, leaving Dak Prescott as the lone signal caller on the team.
While both Rush and Grier have been released, ESPN’s Todd Archer points out that this doesn’t mean they won’t return. There are two possibilities that explain why Dallas released the two quarterbacks: One, the Cowboys could be watching the quarterback market to see where the chips come from. A quarterback could be out of a job after today’s action that intrigues Dallas. It is also possible that the Cowboys have released the two quarterbacks so that there is some freedom with how to build their 53-man roster, before they eventually bring one or both back.
Grier is subject to waivers while Rush is not. Archer believes both signal callers will likely be back with the Cowboys in some form. Rush spent most of his career with the Cowboys, playing in five games with one start last season. Overall, he completed 30 of 47 passes for 422 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. In Rush’s one start, he beat the Minnesota Vikings 20-16 while throwing for 325 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
Grier is a former third-round pick of the Carolina Panthers out of West Virginia, who was claimed off waivers by the Cowboys last September. He is a practice squad candidate unless claimed on waivers.
