More than 600 student-athletes tried out for a fall sports team at Hingham High School
HINGHAM – A little rain wasn’t enough to spoil the first week of preseason practice at Hingham High School. More than 600 Harbormen were on the field, track and field at school last week as we took another step closer to what promises to be an exciting new season of high school sports.
Football got a few days head start as always in the new season, but football, volleyball, boys golf, field hockey, cross country and cheerleading were all close. Everyone was buzzing around the HHS campus last week as the athletic program tries to match the accolades of a 2021 fall season that included multiple league titles as well as a memorable girls program all the way to the Division 1 state championship game.
Hingham High Athletic Director Jim Quatromoni believes this group has the drive to accomplish some big things in 2022.
“We’re going to have north of 600 student-athletes making the teams once again this season, which is a really good number” considering everything the athletes have faced over the course of two years, Quatromoni said. “Things are still shaking out, but soccer looks like it will have more than 100 players again this season, and the girls soccer program has seen a nice jump in their numbers.
“I like to see the participation numbers where they are right now,” he added. “It’s great to get back to a point where we can just let kids be kids again and let them have some fun playing sports while representing their high school. Playing sport is a great experience for everyone and I think we all miss it when it’s gone. I think all the players and coaches are ready to start again and we’ll see when everyone can this season.”
Despite the stormy weather during the first week of training, everyone managed to stick to the schedule. Training times are intentionally scheduled during the morning and later afternoon to avoid potential heat index issues during the hottest part of the day.
“Both the playing field and the grass field we use for football training are in excellent condition. Even after the rain we had on Monday and Tuesday, football was back on the grass the next day. We put together a great maintenance schedule with the city for the grass courts and it’s holding up well,” said Quatromoni.
In addition to the new number of athletes from the Harbormen, there will be two new head coaches on board this fall. Mary-Frances Monroe is the new head coach of the girls’ soccer team, and Eric Gill is now the man in charge of the boys’ golf program.
The games begin for real on Wednesday, September 9, when the Harbourwomen soccer team will host King Philip. On Friday, West Bridgewater hosts field hockey, volleyball travels to Barnstable, and football begins its schedule at home with a tough non-league matchup against defending Division 6 state champion Rockland High.
