NEW YORK – Marquette University men’s golfer Hunter Eichhorn and women’s volleyball player Hope Werch were announced Tuesday as the winners of the 2021-22 BIG EAST Sport Excellence Awards, which recognize academic and athletic achievement as well as community service in their sports.

The Sports Excellence Awards are presented to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic achievement, athletic excellence or performance and community service. Student-athletes who have earned junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. Winners are selected by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
Eichhorn, who also won the men’s golf award last year, made his fourth NCAA regional appearance in Columbus, Ohio in May after being named the BIG EAST Men’s Golf Player of the Year for the third time in his career. He is the only player in league history to earn player of the year three times and set a Marquette record with an 11-under 61 in the final game of the Puerto Rico Classic on February 15. His 54-of-203 (- – 13) score in Puerto Rico was also a career low.
The graduate student was an All-BIG EAST First Team selection for the fourth time this spring. Eichhorn is the only golfer in Marquette history to earn all-district honors at four different events.
