China’s esports market revenue grew 14% year-on-year in 2021 despite a tough regulatory environment for gaming in the world’s second-largest economy, according to a new report from intelligence firm Niko Partners.

Esports refers to professional games where players often play against each other in big tournaments and fans watch via live streams.

China remains the world’s largest single-country market with $403.1 million in esports revenue in 2021, Niko Partners said in a report released Thursday.

“What China has is [a] kind of advantage in the esports space, it’s a really big market with a really huge population of gamers who are interested in esports content…in becoming themselves in esports professionals,” Alexander said. Champlin, head of esports at Niko Partners, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe” on Thursday.

China continues to grow despite a tougher line on gaming from regulators. Last year, Beijing introduced rules limiting the amount of time those under 18 can play video games online, up to three hours a week.

Chinese regulators also froze new game approvals for distribution and monetization between July 2021 and April this year.

The impact has been felt by China’s biggest game companies, NetEase and Tencent.

While the esports market has been holding up well, Champlin warned there could be some impact on the future of professional gaming in China.

“What these regulations do in particular with regards to youth games is really restrict the lines of esports players. So while there’s still a lot of hype around esports titles, esports celebrities, we’re a little worried about what this will do for future generations of esports fans and esports professionals… and what this might do for China’s historical dominance in space,” Champlin told CNBC.

Despite the broader crackdown on youth gaming, there appears to be government support for esports. Last year, the great city of Shanghai broke ground on a 500,000-square-meter esports arena.

Japan and South Korea are the other two big markets in Asia for esports revenue. This may interest you : China launches high-tech aircraft carrier at naval milestone.

Although China continues to dominate, there are other regions and countries that are growing faster.

Esports revenue in Southeast Asia totaled $80.1 million in 2021, up 27.3% year-on-year. India saw esports revenue grow $20.3 million last year, a 26% increase from 2020.

“It [India] is a huge market and historically it has been undervalued as a sort of dollar-to-player ratio,” Champlin said.

“What that means is that as the purchasing power of Indians increases, as the market becomes more saturated with smartphones, the potential player base and the audience base expands dramatically. What we’re also seeing is a huge investment from the key players in the Indian gaming market,” he added.
