Hempstead, NY – Hofstra seniors Tim Hegarty (men’s lacrosse) and Lucy Porter (women’s soccer) were named recipients of the Colonial Athletic Association’s Leadership and Sport Excellence Award for their sports, the conference office said Tuesday morning.
The award mimics the Chuck Boone Leadership Award in football and the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award in men’s and women’s basketball. From the 19 sports supported by the conference, one student-athlete was selected to represent the highest standards of teamwork, honesty, leadership and athleticism in terms of academic and athletic achievement. The winners were voted by representatives of the CAA faculty athletics.
Receiving his second CAA School of Management and Sports Award, Porter graduated in December with a degree in Community Health with a final GPA of 3.87, with minors in neuroscience and psychology. He repeated to Dr. The Sylvia J. Giallombardo Award for Best Female Athlete at HOFSPYS 2022 was named CoSIDA Academic All-America® Second Team and CAA Women’s Fellow Athlete of the Year.
Porter made an outstanding appearance on the field for the women’s soccer team as he was named United Soccer Coaches’ third American team and the CAA’s quarterback for the third year in a row after scoring 25 points by seven goals. and 11 assists. Porter’s game helped Pride win the seventh CAA title and fifth place in six seasons and reach the second round of the 2021 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championships. Porter finished his Hofstra career program as the all-time leader with 123 points and ranks second in terms of career goals (48) and productive passes (27).
With a cumulative GPA of 3.76, Hegarty graduated in athletics in May this year. Hegarty, who has received a six-time award from the CAA Commissioner for Academic Honors, was also nominated for the Marques Colston School of Health Professionals and Health Services. In addition, he was one of four Hofstra student athletes named the American Athlete of the Year by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Hegarty also contributed to community service efforts through the HEADstrong Foundation and Tunnel to Towers.
One of the five Pride captains of 2022, Hegarty started in all 15 games in close defense and scored 11 goals and nine lost the ball, taking only one penalty throughout the season. In his four years as Hegarty wore the Hofstra uniform, Hegarty made 44 matches for the Pride, starting at 17 starts, scoring 17 globes and losing 13 balls.
