COLORADO SPRINGS — Cool Science is about making science and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math) fun for kids.
It all started in 2001 when the founder Jennifer Lacy (Rivers), a chemist and engineer joined with other scientists such as Ron Furstenau and created the 501 (c) (3) non-profit in 2003.
They toured local schools presenting fun chemistry and other science demonstrations. As other volunteer scientists and engineers began to grow, so did their programs.
Cool Science started hosting presentations throughout the day with 4-6 different science shows and mini-carnivals with hands-on activities.
In 2008, volunteer engineer Marc Staub took over and managed to expand “Science Day” into a full game.
Thanks to the collaboration of the annual community gathering, local vendors, volunteers, and UCCS, this quickly grew into an annual fall Carnival Day at UCCS.
Seventy-five local companies, organizations, clubs, and non-profits had booths set up on the UCSC campus to teach kids about things like physics and launching rockets, gravity and lifting others in wood, plants and food that are eaten, and even science. magic show.
A retired chemistry professor at the Air Force Academy and Cool Science Board President, Dr. Ron Fuerstenau wore the magic of science to tell children that although science may seem like magic, it is all true.
“Many times, science for many children can seem out of reach for them. And we want them to know from a young age that science is something you can live with,” said Dr. Furstenau.
Dr. Furstenau had several volunteers come to help him with this effort encouraging young children to think about growing up to be a scientist.
Carnival Day kicks off three weeks of fun STEM events happening now through October 9th at the Cool Science Festival. _____
