A free webinar in August offers potential solutions on how to address and overcome politically motivated thinking in light of the challenges posed by growing partisanship in Washington, DC, and even in our backyards.
Presented by the ADA’s Advocacy Council for Access and Prevention, The Science of Advocacy will be live Aug. 18 from 7-8 p.m. Central time, and one hour of continuing education credit for participants is awaiting approval.
The facilitator of the webinar is Jacob Thompson, Ph.D., director of general education and high school curriculum at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Having served as a residency professor in the UNLV’s Department of Communication Studies and coach and director of the UNLV’s debate team, his research and teaching has focused on the presidential and presidential debates. political campaigning, persuasion, defense, and argumentation.
“Today, in America and around the world, people are increasingly divided into partisan lines,” said Drs. Thompson. “This is really unfortunate because all the important challenges of our time, from public health to climate change, and everything in between. We all need our collective efforts to address them. Advocating for effective public policies can help. to bridge these partisan divisions and persuade people to work together for the common good. ”
At the conclusion of the webinar, participants were able to identify the role that political passion and partisanship play in undermining basic reasoning skills and the ability to think clearly and explain how values form political conflict over facts; apply a variety of effective deliberative strategies to resolve such conflicts in accordance with empirical data sounded from cultural cognition studies; and create successful advocacy strategies for issues that matter to their group.
