July 15 (Reuters) – Automakers and retail stocks led European shares higher on Friday after a two-day rally that saw investors grapple with changing expectations of a U.S. rate hike, Italy’s political crisis and recession risks.
Italian shares ( .FTMIB ) rose 1.4%, bouncing back from a 2-1/2-year low hit in the previous session as investors awaited further developments in the country’s political crisis.
Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi has offered to resign after one of the parties in his fractured coalition failed to back him in a confidence vote on his plan to tackle soaring prices. read more

“Stocks with greater international diversification and a strong financial structure that are protected against inflation should be preferred, while financial and cyclical stocks have the most downside exposure.”
The STOXX 600 index (.STOXX) rose 0.8%. It fell 2.6% in the last two sessions as the US Federal Reserve may raise interest rates by a more than expected 100 basis points later this month.
But worries eased slightly after two of the central bank’s most extreme policymakers said overnight they favored another 75 basis point (bps) hike. read more

Richemont and Burberry lost 4.9% and 6.4% respectively, while peers including LVMH ( LVMH.PA ), Hermes ( HRMS.PA ) and Kering ( PRTP.PA ) lost between 0.7% and 1.7% .
According to data from Refinitiv, STOXX 600 companies saw second-quarter profits rise 21.7% year-on-year, with much of the growth coming from the energy sector.
