July 15 (Reuters) – Automakers and retail stocks led European shares higher on Friday after a two-day rally that saw investors grapple with changing expectations of a U.S. rate hike, Italy’s political crisis and recession risks.

Italian shares ( .FTMIB ) rose 1.4%, bouncing back from a 2-1/2-year low hit in the previous session as investors awaited further developments in the country’s political crisis.

“Stocks with greater international diversification and a strong financial structure that are protected against inflation should be preferred, while financial and cyclical stocks have the most downside exposure.”
