Many Georgians hitting the road for the July 4th travel season saw a familiar face at the gas station as Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams smiled from screens at more than 5,500 gas stations across the state.

Abrams’ campaign bought ads at pumps in an attempt to debunk Governor Brian Kemp’s messages about high gas prices.

“Georgians are struggling with rising costs, but a gubernatorial candidate has a plan to help,” says a male voice in the ad as footage of Abrams speaks to voters. “Stacey Abrams says no to tax increases, but she says it’s not enough. She is also asking to suspend the gas tax until the end of 2022 to keep more money in her pocket.”

On March 18, Kemp signed a bill suspending the state fuel tax until May 31. It has since renewed it several times, most recently on July 1st, and is set to expire on August 13th unless renewed again. Abrams says Kemp must reassure Georgians that the tax will be lifted at least until the end of the year.

Georgia’s gas tax is 29.1 cents per gallon for gasoline and 32.6 cents per gallon for diesel.

“In March, I took decisive action to help those impacted by high prices at the pump,” Kemp said in a statement following the latest renewal. “Unfortunately, President Biden and Democratic leaders have not done their part to solve this problem, instead urging Americans facing record inflation to live more frugally. To provide real relief to Georgians, I am once again extending the supply chain state of emergency and suspending our state fuel tax.”

Kemp is likely relishing the opportunity to snub National Democrats every month while taking steps he can argue will keep dollars in Georgians’ pockets, said University of Georgia political science professor Charles Bullock.

“What Republicans really want to talk about right now is the cost of groceries, the cost of gasoline, prices in general,” he said. “What they particularly don’t want to talk about, at least in this state, would be things like abortion rights or Democratic claims of voter suppression. These are the kinds of issues that Democrats want to talk about, along with the expansion of Medicaid. So the elements of inflation, the Republicans think, will work for them, and they will link Abrams, but also Warnock, to the Democratic government, in essence saying, ‘If you want prices to stabilize, you don’t want to see continued inflation. , you need to make sure the Republicans are in control of politics.’”

President Joe Biden’s disapproval rating is a historically dismal 56.3%, worse than any other modern president, according to data from FiveThirtyEight.

An ABC News/Ipsos poll found that 32% of Americans listed the economy, unemployment and jobs as their top issue, more than three times as often as the second highest priority, crime and corruption. At the same time, the researchers found that only 37% of respondents approved of Biden’s handling of the economy.

Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker is taking a similar approach to Kemp in his campaign against Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock, seeking to tie the senator to the unpopular president.

In recent remarks, Walker blamed Warnock for voting against the Keystone XL pipeline and for allowing oil to be shipped abroad while prices are high in the US.

“Raphael Warnock has voted four times to cancel the Keystone XL pipeline, and Joe Biden just said we need to deal with these high prices ‘as long as it takes,’” Walker said in a statement Tuesday. “As Senator Warnock continues to empower Joe Biden, I have a question for him: Are you willing to stand up to his party’s extreme base and support the expansion of domestic drilling, including fracturing and reopening the Keystone XL pipeline?”

Warnock has pushed for measures he says will help offset inflation for Georgians — including lifting the 18-cent federal gas tax, an idea now supported by Biden but not other elected Democrats — and drug price caps for elderly and insulin users.

Economists tend to point to a number of factors to explain the recent high pump prices, including US energy policy, but also geopolitical factors like the war in Ukraine and economic considerations like rising world consumption due to post-pandemic demand after production declined during the height of the pandemic. the pandemic.

Presidents have little direct influence over pump prices, and senators and governors have even less, but that may not matter to voters, Bullock said.

“Most voters don’t have a bachelor’s degree, let alone a doctorate in economics,” he said. “So the average voter can feel the pain, the shoe squeezing, so to speak, but they don’t know exactly how to fix it. When the team is doing poorly, what do you do? You fire the coach. Perhaps there are many other reasons why the team is doing poorly. But it’s a very dramatic thing to do, to blame the current government and put the other team on.”
