Considering everything that’s going on in the US right now—economic hardship, assassinations, street protests—President Biden’s Fourth of July statement was deeply divisive. “In recent days,” he said, “there is reason to think that the country is moving backwards, freedoms are diminishing, the rights we think are protected no longer. A reminder that we remain in the ongoing battle for the American soul.”

Biden was of course referring to one thing—the Supreme Court Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade, the decision that identified the constitutional right to abortion.
