Prysmian Group, a world leader in the power and telecommunications cable systems industry, yesterday welcomed US President Joe Biden to visit the construction site of its new submarine power cable plant in Brayton Point, Massachusetts. As part of its plan to support offshore wind development in the US, Prysmian Group is committed to transforming the area, home to the former Somerset coal plant, into a high-tech hub for the energy transition process.
The presence and participation of the President of the United States is a strong testimony that the Group’s strategic vision and commitment to a sustainable energy transition are recognized not only in the market, but especially from an institutional perspective. The Brayton Point site will effectively become a manufacturing hub for the country’s offshore wind industry and will have the capacity to create highly skilled local jobs in an exciting and currently growing sector.
The Brayton Point facility will manufacture innovative subsea inter-array and export cables up to 275 kV AC or 525 kV DC, which are required to connect offshore wind farms to onshore power grids. These cables will be used to deliver power from several new offshore wind farms, which are vital to President Biden’s goal of deploying 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030 to achieve the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables, in order to stretcher with global warming. The plant will also have a research and development facility with a high-voltage test laboratory, which will be the first of its kind in the United States.
In addition to being a fundamental asset for US offshore wind production, Prysmian’s investment will have a positive role in the community, developing Brayton Point into a strategic knowledge and manufacturing center that supports the sustainable development of the area and creates new quality jobs and opportunities.
