Nyobolt is the only known tungsten-intensive battery company approaching commercialization

GOSLAR, Germany, July 15, 2022 / PRNewswire / – H.C. Starck Tungsten Powders (“HCS”), a wholly owned subsidiary of Masan High-Tech Materials (“MHT”), today announced the signing of final agreements to invest £ 45m (approximately € 52m) in Nyobolt Limited (“Nyobolt”). , a fast-charging Li-ion battery solution company that utilizes HCS’s advanced tungsten materials in its anode, for a 15% equity ratio on a fully diluted basis. The investment, which represents the majority of Nyobolt’s Series B funding round, is expected to accelerate HCS’s vision of becoming a high-tech, value-adding business by developing new tungsten applications that are critical to future technologies.

Nyobolt commercializes lithium-ion batteries with record current density and ultra-fast charging capabilities. The company’s technology is based on a decade of research into fast charging of lithium-ion batteries led by battery researcher at the University of Cambridge, Professor Dame Clare Gray. Nyobolt’s unique niobium and tungsten anode systems demonstrate superior performance over other Li-ion anode technologies. The benefits include:

– Charging time: & gt; 90% charged in <5 minutes- Higher input power density: 10x power addresses range anxiety and allows for more smaller and lighter batteries- Longer shelf life: 10x durability resulting in lower total cost of ownership for battery life- Improved safety: wider temperature performance and reduced fire risk

Such capabilities enable new applications and improved customer experience with end-use goals such as high-performance and industrial vehicles, automation (robotics), consumer devices, wireless tools, stationary storage and mobile fast charging.

While the income from HCS’s investment will help finance Nyobolt’s construction of anode production facilities and R&D centers, both parties expect significant synergies through future collaborations, including:

– Recycling: creating a circular economy for EV batteries that utilize HCS ‘recycling capabilities, including its innovative and environmentally superior black mass recycling technology – Tungsten supply: a reliable source of critical tungsten materials from HCS, the global western leader in the tungsten recycling industry – Cathode technology: R&D specialists have a strong history in the development of cathode coatings- Production knowledge and infrastructure: in addition to being one of the global leaders in tungsten powder production and recycling of tungsten scrap, HCS has an internal, industrial-scale laboratory that provides elementary analysis for battery materials, and all kinds of chemical and physical properties of inorganic powders.

“This investment marks a milestone in our strategy to move further downstream, and get closer to consumers by developing new, innovative applications including our newly branded ‘starck2charge’ battery series. Nyobolt’s technology is a real breakthrough that we can help commercialize. based on our extensive experience in transferring innovative solutions to large-scale production. This partnership will also accelerate the development towards a circular economy for batteries through improved recycling and new utility models. ” says Hady Seyeda, CEO of H.C. Starck Tungsten Powders.

“I am really proud that just over two years after acquiring and integrating H.C. Starck’s global Tungsten business into MHT, we have been able to expand the breadth of business capabilities through the acquisition of a significant stake in Nyobolt. We look forward to to work with the Nyobolt team to promote their product offerings and opportunities to collaborate in the production and commercialization of their products, as well as offer a full life cycle for the advanced strategic materials required in the Nyobolt batteries. ” said Craig Bradshaw, CEO of MHT.

Nyobolt co-founder & amp; Chief Researcher Professor Dame Clare Gray added “we are pleased to move our technologies from development to distribution in the market. We founded Nyobolt after discovering new anode technologies containing tungsten with remarkable fast charging capability to bring these properties to market in touching applications. H.C. Starck’s funding will help Nyobolt scale our operations in the UK and US and bring a more sustainable solution into the energy storage industry. Nyobolt technology will not only enable net zero in both electrification of transport but also storage “Clean and renewable energy on and off the grid. With the investment of H.C. Starck, Nyobolt’s ultra – fast high – power batteries will help lead the way towards achieving the goals of clean energy set by governments around the world.”

Sai Shivareddy, CEO and co-founder of Nyobolt, said: “Fast charging remains a critical unmet need as the world electrifies with more sustainable forms of energy – a need our technology meets. We are excited about working with H.C. Starck and see it as a springboard To increase the scale and speed of the market that reveals the true potential of Nyobolt technologies, Series B funding will put Nyobolt in the driver’s seat of a fast-moving battery industry and allow us to showcase the uniqueness of our battery technology, developed by our team of With H.C. Starck’s investments and technologies, Nyobolt will expand its production capacity while minimizing its carbon footprint with an efficient recycling and reuse program. “

Nyobolt are groundbreaking battery technologies that achieve record-breaking ultra-fast charging and high power density. This addresses a critical need that other battery innovations cannot meet. Nyobolt’s solutions enable sustainable electrification strategies with smaller, lighter and longer battery-powered devices that aim for carbon-neutral targets.
