The Indian army said on Saturday that the rescue operation was underway and the first advanced light helicopter landed at the scene at around 6:45 am to transport the civilians.

“The rescue team immediately rushed to the scene to get information about victims. An infantry battalion, an additional company from the RR sector and a team of special forces arrived at the sacred cave along with specialized rescue equipment,” Army Spokesperson Colonel Emron Masuvi said in a statement.

He said that all the sacred cave and Nilagrar medical resources have been activated and additional resources deployed.

“Two ALHs were transferred for casualty evacuation, but due to bad weather, the night landing in the cave was not successful,” he added.

Lieutenant General ADS Aujla of the GOC Chinar Corps and Major General Sanjiv Singh Slaria of the GOC Kilo Force visited the sacred cave early in the morning to review the efforts undertaken by the army.

“Citizens are advised to contact the Army Helpline 9149-7209-98 for assistance/enquiry. Callers are also advised to have yatris details such as name, yatra record/RFID number, contact number, Aadhaar number and last known location and time,” the spokesperson said.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has also put its transport and helicopters into service for rescue and relief operations at the Amarnath Cave Sanctuary in Jammu and Kashmir.
