LANSING, Mich. – Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Governor Gretchen Whitmer today highlighted the availability of low or free reproductive health services offered at the state’s 92 Title X clinics. These clinics have served nearly 150,000 Michigan residents for three years, and offer family planning and preventative health care for low-income or uninsured individuals. MDHHS will continue to use all available tools to educate Michigan people about reproductive rights and resources. This effort is based on the department’s years of work to protect reproductive health care.
“Little or no cost-reproductive health care is available at Michigan’s 92 Title X clinics – an important reminder in these times. We will continue to use all the tools in our toolbox to ensure that Michigan residents have access to comprehensive health care and reproductive freedom,” he said. Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “These clinics served nearly 150,000 residents of Michigan between 2018 and 2021. Access to critical reproductive care from screening for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) to pregnancy prevention is necessary for all residents, and I will fight like hell to protect “I have asked government departments to take action to ensure access to reproductive health in light of Dobbs’ decision to overthrow Roe v. Wade.”
Title X was created to provide affordable contraception and reproductive health care to individuals regardless of residence or immigration status, as well as age, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, income or insurance status, or other characteristics. A wide range of services are offered to Michigan residents, including:
“Title X clinics provide vital health care and high-quality reproductive health care to residents of Michigan at little or no cost,” said Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, MDHHS Medical Director. “Everyone deserves access to these critical services, especially family planning. The services are confidential and affordable, and we encourage our citizens to use these benefits. “
Most Title X patients are low-income women, and many are uninsured and not eligible for Medicaid. No one can be denied services based on inability to pay. Women with incomes at or below the poverty level receive fully subsidized services; women with incomes above 100 but less than 250 percent of the poverty level are burdened on a sliding scale; and women with incomes above 250 percent of poverty are charged full taxes.
Emergency birth control pills known as Plan B and abortion pills are available in Michigan, and abortion is still safe and legal in Michigan.
