There was no shortage of smells, flavors and competitiveness at the Battle of the BBQ on Sunday.
“We’re going to make a dipping sauce, but it’s a bit of a secret,” competitor Eric Lustgarten said. “That’s how we won three years ago. So we will continue to do that.”
The annual competition, held by the Albany Jewish Community Center, hosted six teams this year.
On the other side of the competitor’s row, you’ll find a crew with decades of experience in cooking competitions, the bro crew.
“What makes it good? We look at what we’ve won and what other teams have won,” said competitor Mark Swyer. “So we’re looking at what we can do differently and add some spice to the flavor.”
But while the food may look mouthwatering, the real driving force behind this event is the big cause behind it.
“This event brings the entire community together to support the Shalom food bank, which serves more than 250 households each month,” said Chanie Simon, coordinator of the Albany JCC program.
These competitors are willing to overlook a podium finish in the top three to ensure the food bank gets the help it needs.
“This is one of those events that we’re basically here to support that cause, because without the chefs and other things, this event isn’t going to do a great job of bringing people together,” Swyer said.
It’s a feeling even Lustgarten and his team can agree on as they strive to take home the championship title
“A big part of religion is donating and being part of the community,” Lustgarten said. “Much of our good deeds are based on community. So this is ingrained in tradition and religion.”
