NASHVILLE, Tenn (WSMV) – More than a dozen business owners are working to save everything they can after a fire ripped through an office building Tuesday night in North Nashville.

The building that housed everything from beauty salons and law offices is almost a total loss, according to owner Hani Alkifi. The fire was started by a wax machine left in the front room overheated.

The flames reached through the building, destroying the roof, walls and floors in the process. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading throughout the entire structure, but Alkifi said there is significant water and smoke damage throughout.

“There was more damage than I expected, but it was not a complete loss,” Alkifi said. “I hope we start working back on things and try to put things right as soon as we can.”

A number of business owners arrived at the building on Wednesday morning to collect anything that had not been damaged or destroyed in the fire.

Lawyer M. Oliver Osemwegie said she was surprised to see the damage when she retired as no one told her about the fire.

“The first thing that came to mind was what was going on in my office,” Osemwegie said. “It simply came to our notice then. I’m probably working from home right now. “

Osemwegie spent the day working with his daughter to clean files and other important items from his office. She said they are lucky to have only a small amount of water and smoke damage that did not cover most of their office space.

“At least I was able to save a lot of things and be able to use it,” Osemwegie said. “And you won’t have to replace as some of them probably will.”

Others were not so lucky. Much of the upstairs was destroyed in the fire. The walls were left to marrow and paint was squeezing out.

Boards have been placed over the broken windows, and crews have been brought in to begin sweeping up the debris scattered throughout the car park.

Alkifi said it is determined to rebuild and has begun offering other parts of the shopping center to businesses until the work is completed.

“We have to go through and try to repair everything and go back to normal,” Alkifi said.
