New York (CNN Business) Unilever has sold its Ben & amp; Jerry’s business in Israel to his distributor in the country, after ongoing controversy related to his activities in Israel in the West Bank.

Unilever on Wednesday announced sales for an unknown quantity of American quality products (AQP), which distributed to Ben & amp; Jerry’s in Israel. Previously, under AQP ownership, Ben & amp; Jerry’s will be sold under their Hebrew and Arabic names throughout Israel in the West Bank.

The sale marks a long saga that has angered ice fans on all sides of the Israel-Palestine conflict.

The Vermont-based ice cream company, which has been doing business in Israel since 1987, has been under scrutiny for its relations with Israel in recent years as tensions in the region have flared up. Critics have criticized the company for doing business in Israel – especially in West Bank settlements, considered illegal under international law – arguments it does not align with Ben & amp; Jerry’s liberal image.

The company was mostly quiet on the subject: I 2015, Ben & amp; Jerry’s posted on its website that it was “very aware of how complex the local market can be”, and it believed it could positively impact change by maintaining a presence in the region.

Mee Ben & amp; Jerry’s had a change of heart in July 2021, saying he heard and acknowledged the concerns shared by his fans and partners, decided to make ice cream in Israel – and sold it all on the West Bank.

Last summer, Ben & amp; Jerry’s informs AQP that their agreement with the company will not be renewed when it expires at the end of 2022. After that, the company’s ice cream will continue to be sold in Israel “through a different arrangement”.

But this decision has sparked a new wave of controversy: Few claim that Ben & amp; Jerry’s was a member of the Boycott Divestment Sanctions (BDS) movement, which the Anti-Defamation League says aims to delegitimize Israel’s right to state and has some roots in anti-Semitism. The company denies any involvement with BDS.

“Unilever completely rejects and unequivocally rejects any form of discrimination or intolerance,” the company said Wednesday. “Anti-Semitism has no place in society. We have never expressed support for the Boycott Divestment Sanctions (BDS) movement and have no intention of changing that position.”

The AQP sued the companies in March for “illegally ending their 34-year business relationship to boycott Israel.” Ben & amp; Jerry’s and Unilever did not comment on the lawsuit.

But Unliver said on Wednesday that it “used last year’s opportunity to listen to perspectives on this complex and sensitive issue and believes this is the best outcome for Ben & Jerry’s in Israel.”

Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said in a statement that he “thanked Unilever for the action they have taken to resolve this matter.”
