Oh my gosh, where did you go last summer? As school approaches (and many are already in school), the Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET) is inviting kids and their families to finish off the summer with art by joining AMSET. Free Family Art Day Saturday, August. 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m

Children and their families are encouraged to explore the museum and “Don’t Mess with Texas, Mess with Art” by creating art with recycled materials. The artworks will also be related to AMSET’s current exhibition, “Keli Anderson-Staley: Documents & Houses,” on display through September 18.

The exhibition includes installations: “Shelter in Place,” a 10-foot by 10-foot house covered in more than 560 tintype paintings; “The Baking Series: An Unfinished Family History,” a selection of antique baking pans with baked images on top; “Dad, Dad: Tom, Bill,” a variety of Anderson-Staley’s biological and adoptive fathers; “The Raw Materials of War and Peace,” a large number of palimpsest books made from prints and cyanotypes; and “The Paperwork,” an 8-foot by 5-foot piece made of notebook pages, handwritten letters, and photographs. The exhibition will highlight Anderson-Staley’s unique and unique examination of the definition of home, family and community.

At AMSET’s quarterly Family Art Days, hands-on art activities help children and their families explore the art on display and use their creativity to create art similar to those artists’ styles.

Children can make solar prints, recycled collages and similar books as well as draw with Light, Scratch Art, and enjoy Drawing Base. Free cookies and punch will be served. A concession stand serving snowball style food will be available. Throughout the day, AMSET will also draw winners for backpacks filled with school supplies for the new school year.

This Family Arts Day will also include two live demonstrations from Gator Country at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Admission is free and open to the public with all art supplies provided. AMSET is located at 500 Main St. in downtown Beaumont.
