Actor Fahadh Faasil’s survival drama Malayankunju will make its OTT debut on Prime Video on August 11, the streamer announced on Monday. The Malayalam language film is written by Mahesh Narayanan and directed by Sajimon Prabhakar.

Also starring Rajisha Vijayan and Indrans in pivotal roles, Malayankunju is an emotional story of survival, when a man is trapped in a landslide. According to a press release, the film is shot 40 feet below ground level and has surreal sequences that elevate an ordinary survival story to another level.

Faasil said that Malayankunju turned out to be “one of his toughest films” in his career. “Malayankunju is one of the toughest films I have shot so far. The second half of the film is set 40 feet underground, so we had to create a set where we had to crouch and crawl,” said Faasil, who turned 40 on Monday, in a statement.

The film was released in theaters on July 22, and received rave reviews from the critics and viewers. It follows the journey of Anil (Fahadh Faasil), who is a miserable electronics technician living a quiet life with his mother.

“His daily routine is disrupted when his neighbor’s newborn awakens unwanted memories from his past. A multi-faceted person, Anil’s connection with the baby and his struggle to survive under the ruins of an intense landslide form the core of the narrative, the official synopsis says.

Faasil, known for critically acclaimed films like Joji, C U Soon, Malik and Vikram, said he hopes more people will warm to Malayankunju after its release on Prime Video.

“Malayalam cinema has not seen a film like this in recent times and I am happy that the audience and critics have appreciated our efforts. Our industry has been loved by a global audience and we are excited for my fourth collaboration with Prime Video after CU Soon, Joji and Malik.

“I look forward to Malayankunji reaching out to a large audience through this streaming platform and can’t wait to hear from a new set of audiences,” he said.

Prabhakar praised his leading man and said that the actor has given a wonderful performance in the film. “Malayankunju is an engrossing story and Fahadh is just brilliant in it. Despite the tough circumstances, Fahadh gave an amazing performance that has been applauded by cinephiles. Now we look forward to understand how audiences worldwide react to this gripping thriller , said the director.
