Community arts nonprofit Garage Cultural is using the newly awarded funding as a “springboard” to build its new campus.

Driving news: The Kresge Foundation awarded Garage Cultural $150,000 this spring to fund outdoor, conference and green space surrounding the new southwest building.

What’s happening: The space is “at a critical stage,” Garage director Amelia Duran tells Axios.

Main photo: Duran’s father, Ismael “Bandolero” Duran, was a Latin American musician and immigrant who founded Garage Cultural in 2011 for artists and performers.

Flashback: The nonprofit has been trying to buy the building it’s owned for 10 years, but the deal fell through, according to Amelia.

What’s next: Garage Cultural is working on SW Fest, a group of young creators’ free music and art festival, Aug. 27 at the Senate Theatre.
