Netflix has announced a collaboration with Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn on the drama Copenhagen Cowboy, his first production in his native Denmark in 15 years.

The platform described it as a “thrilling, neon-infused noir series” that revolves around young heroine Miu (Angela Bundalovic) as she travels through Copenhagen’s criminal underworld.

Production has wrapped on the six-episode drama, which was shot in Denmark and will begin streaming worldwide on Netflix later this year.

“With Copenhagen Cowboy, I’m reaching back into my past to shape my future by creating a series, an extension of my ever-evolving alter-egos, now in the form of my young heroine, Miu,” said Winding Refn.

The director of Pusher, Drive and The Neon Demon trilogy hinted at future collaborations with the platform.

“Working with Netflix and bringing this show to life has been an absolutely wonderful experience on every level. I see them not only as my partners with many future adventures, but also as my friends. A new term was born: Netflix Winding Refn.”

The series stars Angela Bundalović, Lola Corfixen and Zlatko Burić. The additional cast includes Andreas Lykke Jørgensen, Jason Hendil-Forssell, Li Ii Zhang, Dragana Milutinovic, Mikael Bertelsen and Mads Brügger, among others.

“We are absolutely thrilled to finally announce that we have partnered with Nicolas Winding Refn, one of Denmark’s most acclaimed filmmakers, and are bringing him back to Denmark to produce a local Danish show after more than 15 years abroad,” he said.
