Like several other titles on this list, this superb psychological horror subtly doubles as an allegory for broader social themes, such as oppression. Set in 1980s Tehran, during a series of airstrikes known as the War of the Cities, it follows a mother and daughter who are haunted on earth by a mysterious evil. With echoes of The Babadook as well as its own fresh ideas, Under The Shadow is a good horror entry.
One of Stephen King’s more successful adaptations, this horror drama based on the 1922 novel is a gradual burn with a mesmerizing performance at its core. Thomas Jane, who you will also know from Boogie Nights and The Punisher 2004, gave one of the best performances of his career as the ever proud Wilfred James, a farmer who made the wise decision to kill his wife with the help of a teenage son. . The consequences are worse on some level (if you don’t like mice, you really won’t like them after this).
This clever psychological horror is partially drawn from the experience of co-author Isa Mazzei as a camgirl (or webcam model). Yet Cam is not a documentary, following Alice Ackerman, a young camgirl who one day discovers an exact replica of herself already taking over her show. This unique thriller flashing red with the threat of technology is an excellent feature to hit play on.
Vampires vs. the Bronx (2020)
Vampires vs Bronx is a unique horror-comedy in more ways than one. Set in the New York borough of the Bronx, it follows young Miguel Martinez, a big -hearted boy helping raise money for a struggling local warehouse. But it’s not just new designer clothing stores that are threatening to move: pale -neck compsers are scary eating people and their property. A commentary on gentrification with goofy charm, twists and thrills, Vampires vs Bronx is a fresh, entertaining spin on the genre.
This tense thriller is set in the Scottish highlands away from a good holiday destination. Prepare for a full-on nerve-wringing dream that its protagonist is desperate to wake from. Vaughn and Marcus go on a boys weekend hunting trip, but after a night of drinking, they find themselves facing an event that was never planned. Horror films made by experts are calmly packaged as an allegory for STDs. You read that right: It Follows to train its lens on magical entities that live on the periphery, constantly chasing prey at a slow rate, such as zombies. A cat-and-mouse game between captor and captive ensues. Although slower in time in a limited setting, Berlin Syndrome certainly delivers a terrifying thriller.

Revealing his occult crimes through a terrifying human story, Imahna follows Bol and Rial, a refugee couple from Sudan, who are struggling to adapt to a new life in a British city. Don’t expect to jump right away-His house plays into the psychological spectrum of the past, adding more corridors of torture. A heartrending, powerful piece.

Before The Haunting of Hill House series was perfect, Mike Flanagan brought us this deft adaptation of Stephen King Gerald’s novel Game. Carla Gugino is incredible as Jessie, a woman who vacations with her husband in a remote lake house in Alabama. When Jessie ended up handcuffed to the bed and there was no one to help him escape, it became a problem to survive and escape. Another chapter of Flanagan’s melancholy-suffused horror that surges into quiet triumph for his haunted character.
