London -born frieze artist Abbas Zahedi was named the winner of the 2022 Frieze Artist Award. His Wait and {Sonic Support} will occupy a venue near the gates of Frieze London, taking place October 12-16 at Regent’s Park with the Frieze Masters. The project, a wooden building reminiscent of a bus stop, will be home to a series of live activities that will be broadcast via “DIY radio” on the internet and in the show. According to Frieze’s organizers, “the commission is based on Zahedi’s long -standing interest in boundaries, symbols and how things can work in systems or networks.”

Thirty -eight -year -old Zahedi is an assistant artist at the London Barbican Center. He first studied medicine at University College London before completing an MA in Contemporary Photography at Central Saint Martins in 2019. He then spent a 2019-20 stint at South London Gallery, where he created How to Make a How from a Why ?, an installation with good work said to have been acquired by Tate in 2021.

The Frieze Artist Award was founded in 2013 and for the past four years has been successful in partnership with Forma, a London -based fashion art organization. Past winners include Himali Singh Soin (2019), Alberta Whittle (2020), and Sung Tieu (2021). This year applicants were asked to consider the capacity in terms of their work and its installation. To create his branded installation, Zahedi will rely on materials that can be used and sustained and will focus on a low -complexity installation system.

Chris Rawcliffe, Forma’s acting director, said the artists competing for the award were charged with creating “timeless works on video, performance and audio.” Rawcliffe says Zahedi’s Waiting With {Sonic Support} “sits well in the middle of these different art forms, creating an opportunity for communication, collaboration and trade.”
