Social media accounts for The Boys and Prime Video are planning a Barbie movie night.
On Twitter, The Boys account tweeted a manic photo of Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) titled “one ticket to the movie Barbie.” Prime Video then responded with a picture of Homelander (Antony Starr) and the caption “one ticket to the movie Ken.” Starr himself chimed in to ask for a ticket for the two, and the Boys’ bill responded by saying they should do a double feature “and then chuck ICEE at the Dawn of the Seven showing on the way out.” ICEE is a type of frozen beverage.
Based on the Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson comic book series, The Boys was created by Eric Kripke, who is probably best known for his work on Supernatural. The show follows the titular team, which works to undermine Vought International, the unethical corporation behind superheroes. The show premiered in 2019, with a second season later in 2020. Due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the third season of The Boys did not come out until 2022. The show is one of Prime Video’s most popular and has received rave reviews from critics. Recently, the streaming service renewed The Boys for Season 4.
Due to the success of the show, Prime Video has already released a spinoff, the animation The Boys Presents: Diabolical. In addition, the streaming service is working on a spin-off centered on the G-Men, which are a parody of Marvel’s X-Men.
Barbie, who is directed by Greta Gerwig from her screenplay and Noah Baumbach, has Margot Robbie as Mattel’s titular doll, with Ryan Gosling as Ken. While plot details are scary about the project at the time of writing, the star cast also includes Simu Liu, Will Ferrell and America Ferrera.
New episodes of The Boys Season 3 will air on Prime Video on Friday. The finale, “The Instant White-Hot Wild,” is scheduled for July 8th. Barbie is scheduled for release on July 21st.
