Video game movies are usually unwatchable. For some reason, a lot of people have trouble taking video games and turning them into movies. There are some movies that do this reasonably well. While it wasn’t an absolutely breathtaking movie, it was a lot of fun.
In order to recognize the different types of games, only one film per franchise will be recognized on this list. The purpose of the list is to highlight films based on how exciting they are to the viewer.
10/10 Silent Hill
Silent Hill is without a doubt the worst movie on this list due to its very flawed story. The gameplay is also kind of bad – and in some ways, it’s actually unbearable at times. Although the story of the movie can’t be followed at times, it still brings the world of Silent Hill to life. You can watch the world change and the different forms of the monsters give off the eerie feel that the games have. It’s not a movie that people will watch over and over again, but the world building is something that fans of the game can appreciate.
9/10 Tomb Raider (2018)
If a viewer is watching this Tomb Raider movie looking for a movie to inspire them, then they are watching the wrong movie. Tomb Raider can be a great movie to watch as the origin story of one of the most popular video game characters continues.
It’s a different take on Tomb Raider in the sense that we get to see some of Lara Croft’s early life. The part of the film where Lara finally gets around to actually robbing the tomb is full of inviting action moments. 8/10 The Angry Birds Movie 2
The Angry Birds Movie 2 was actually a big step up from the original, as the original flopped. He hasn’t given much substance to the world of animated films. It seemed like the writers knew not to take themselves too seriously this time around. This made for many comedic moments.
The pace of the film remains well composed throughout. It felt like a movie that didn’t try to be like anything else, while still being able to provide a lot of laughs to its audience.
7/10 Rampage
Rampage lives up to its name. Fans of the original arcade game will find a lot to enjoy in this film adaptation. The monsters are huge and they go around causing massive destruction with no end in sight. The relationship between Dwayne Johnson and George is also interesting enough that there’s a story of sorts amidst all the destruction.
It’s fun to watch the giant GMOs move. This probably isn’t a movie that people will watch multiple times, but that first viewing can be a lot of fun.
6/10 Uncharted
Uncharted was not well received by critics, but many fans of the game enjoyed the film. This is evident from the 90% audience rating it received on Rotten Tomatoes. The film doesn’t do anything too new in terms of its story, but the ride it takes the viewer on is an enjoyable one. It takes some major parts from the game, but it’s not a perfect remake of any game.
This movie is a treat for all those who like the series. Seeing some of the game’s iconic moments come to life in a big-budget movie is worth watching.
5/10 Mortal Kombat (2021)
The Mortal Kombat movie wasn’t a total disaster like its predecessors. This movie was full of many enjoyable moments and seemed to retain a lot of the authenticity that the games had. The film was panned by critics, but scored an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The story isn’t terrible. It has a lot of predictability in the way it’s told, but makes the fights easier to digest by offering breaks between the violence. The deaths and action sequences are incredible. This is a movie that stays true to what fans love about the franchise.
4/10 Detective Pikachu
Detective Pikachu lets people’s imaginations see what it would be like if Pokemon and humans could coexist. There isn’t as much variety in the games as the amount of Pokemon introduced in the movie. It does a really good job of introducing these Pokemon. They all feel well designed and will bring a smile to the face of anyone who has played these games.
Additionally, Ryan Reynolds steals the show with his portrayal of Pikachu, who is as charming and witty as he is adorable in his appearance.
3/10 Sonic The Hedgehog 2
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 builds on what the first movie did and really does it much better. You can throw Sonic right into the action as soon as the movie starts, so the pacing is great throughout the movie. The introduction of Tales and Knuckles was also well done. Both characters appealed to both new and old audiences.
The movie has a lot of very childish elements. Even with these elements, they manage to add a lighthearted feel to the film.
2/10 Resident Evil: Damnation
This movie is said to be the setup for Resident Evil 6, although it takes place as its own story. It uses characters that are popular in the story, such as Leon as the main protagonist. The story surrounding the film is wrapped in political power. There are many interesting concepts presented in the series. It gives players a glimpse into the Resident Evil game world as bio-organic warfare becomes viable.
The romantic elements shown between Ada and Leon in the film are very obvious. This adds an interesting element to the film’s story, which has been lightly touched upon in the games.
1/10 Werewolves Within
Werewolves Within is the best example of how to turn a video game into a movie. The premise is the same as the game. A group of people must figure out which one of them is a werewolf trying to eat them. There’s also an element of mystery to the group trying to figure out if werewolves are even real.
Everything this film brings is fresh to the horror comedy realm. The characters are extremely crazy. While some may argue that they are too unusual to be a mistake, they bring plenty of laughs.
