Ebuyer, the UK’s largest independent electronics retailer, conducted a study to identify the most popular video games in Europe. Call of Duty: Black Ops II

Call of Duty: Black Ops II is the most popular video game in UK, Austria, Denmark and Lithuania. Gamers will also love the fast-paced multiplayer, as well as the decision-making single-player campaigns that are full of twists and turns.

“The graphics and features in games like Call of Duty: Black Ops II are incredibly stunning and ahead of their time, so it’s not surprising to see people across Europe loving these games so much!” Courtney Williamson, Marketing Manager at Ebuyer , commented on the study.

Black Ops II was developed by Treyarch and published by Activision. It continues the story of Call of Duty: Black Ops from 2010 and is set in two different time periods: the late 1980s and 2025. In the 1980s, the player switches control between Alex Mason and Frank Woods, two of Black’s protagonists Ops as the player takes control of Mason’s son David (codenamed “Section”) in 2025. In both time periods, the characters follow Raul Menendez, a Nicaraguan cartel leader responsible for the kidnapping of Woods in the 1980s and later for the outbreak of a second Cold War in 2025.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Released in 2019, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the most popular video game in Estonia, Ireland and Portugal with an average positive sentiment of around 65%. Considered by many to be the best of all modern Call of Duty video games, Modern Warfare has been praised for its phenomenal campaign, which features gritty realism and well-loved characters that long-time fans have grown to love.

The game campaign follows a CIA officer and British SAS forces teaming up with rebels from the fictional country of Urzikstan and fighting together against the Russian forces that have invaded the country and the Al-Qatala terrorist group. Assassins Creed II

Assassin’s Creed II remains the go-to game of Finland and Latvia, giving it a positive sentiment score well over 50%. The 2009 action-adventure game was praised for its brilliantly crafted single-player storyline and incredibly accurate recreations of cities from 15th-century Italy.

Developed by Ubisoft Montréal and published by Ubisoft, the game follows the millennia-old struggle between the Assassins, who fight to preserve peace and free will, and the Templars, who seek peace through control. Set in the 21st century, the game’s framework story follows Desmond Miles as he relives the genetic memories of his ancestor, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, to uncover the mysteries left behind by an ancient race called the First Civilization in hopes of ending the Assassin- Templar conflict.

Grand Theft Auto V

2013’s Grand Theft Auto V is the most popular video game in Bulgaria and the Czech Republic with positive sentiment scores of 44% and 25%, respectively. Aside from the fun that comes with freely exploring the game’s criminal world, players also love Grand Theft Auto V’s single player experience, which puts them in charge of 3 would-be criminals.

Set in the fictional state of San Andreas in Southern California, the single-player story follows three protagonists – retired bank robber Michael De Santa, street thug Franklin Clinton, and drug dealer and gun smuggler Trevor Philips – as they attempt to pull off robberies under pressure from a corrupt government agency and powerful criminal.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

Not all LEGO video games have been a hit in Europe, but LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is definitely a huge hit on the continent, particularly in Germany and Malta, with both countries giving it a positive sentiment score of around 50%.

Released in 2022, the game adapts all nine entries of the Skywalker Saga film series. In addition to its hilarious physical comedy, the game has also received generally positive reviews from players and critics alike for its graphics and level design.

Minecraft

Minecraft is undoubtedly one of the most popular video games in the world. But in Europe, Spain and Romania are his biggest fans. The game has a positive sentiment value of between 25% and 30% in both countries.

Fully released in 2011, Minecraft is a sandbox video game in which players explore a blocky, 3D generated world with virtually infinite terrain. Depending on the game mode, players can fight enemy mobs and team up with or compete against other players in the same world. In survival mode, players must acquire resources to build in the world and maintain their health, while in creative mode, players have unlimited resources and access to flight. There is also a variety of user-generated content such as mods, servers, skins, texture packs, and custom maps that add new gameplay mechanics and opportunities.

Pokémon Red

Pokémon Red was released in Europe in 1999 and, along with Pokémon Blue, is the first installment in the widely successful Pokémon video game series. Developed for the first Game Boy, Pokémon Red is still the most popular video game in Italy and the Netherlands, both of which gave the game a 30% to 35% positive sentiment score.

In Pokémon Red, the player controls the protagonist from an overhead perspective, navigating the fictional region of Kanto to complete the Pokémon battle. The goal of the game is to become the champion of the Indigo League by defeating the eight Gym Leaders and then the Elite Four, the top four Pokémon trainers in the country. Another goal is to complete the Pokédex by catching the 151 Pokemon available in the game.

Rocket League

Originally released in 2015, Rocket League remains the most popular video game in France and Sweden, with both countries giving it a 40% to 45% positive sentiment score.

Described as “soccer but with rocket-powered cars,” Rocket League assigned each of the two teams up to eight players who use rocket-powered vehicles to slam a ball into their opponent’s goal and earn points over the course of a game. The game includes single player and multiplayer modes that can be played both locally and online.

FIFA 2022

Most popular in Luxembourg with a positive sentiment score of 47%, FIFA 2022 is the newest installment in the FIFA video games series. The video game with crystal clear graphics lets players play with the latest soccer teams and clubs.

But in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, publisher Electronics Arts removed Russian national teams from all versions of its soccer video games and made Russian and Belarusian players illegal for FIFA 22.

Final Fantasy VI

While some players might argue that Final Fantasy VII is much better than Final Fantasy VI, players in Cyprus think the latter is still the game to beat, giving it a positive mood rating of 75%.

Final Fantasy VI was originally released in 1994 and is set in a world with technology similar to the Second Industrial Revolution. With a growing cast that includes 14 permanently playable characters, the game’s story explores the following themes: rebellion against an immoral military dictatorship, pursuit of a magical arms race, use of chemical weapons in warfare, and depictions of violent and apocalyptic confrontations. It also tells of personal redemption arcs, teenage pregnancy and the renewal of hope and life itself.

Halo: Reach

There were many Halo video games that came after Halo: Reach, but it remains popular across Europe, particularly in Poland, whose players gave it a positive sentiment score of 26%. In addition to having one of the best Halo campaigns of all time, Halo: Reach has also been praised for its Forge mode, considered by many to be the gold standard for giving players the freedom and tools to create their own fun.

Halo: Reach is set in the year 2552, when humanity is locked in a war with the alien Alliance, and puts players in control of Noble Six, a member of an elite squad of super soldiers, as the human world known as the Reach comes under the Alliance’s assault falls.

RuneScape

Although its graphics, story and gameplay can’t compete with almost every other game, RuneScape remains a fan favorite in Europe, especially in Croatia, where it has been rated by players with 56% positive sentiment.

RuneScape was first released in 2001 and is set in the world of Gielinor, a medieval fantasy realm divided into different kingdoms, regions and cities. Players can travel around Gielinor using a variety of methods, including on foot, by spells, or by charter ship. Each region offers different types of monsters, resources, and quests to challenge players.

Super Mario Bros.

First released in Europe in 1987, Super Mario Bros. is still the most popular video game in Greece, where it received a positive sentiment rating of 52% from the country’s players.

Often cited as one of the greatest video games of all time, Super Mario Bros. is praised for its precise controls. It lets players control Mario or his brother Luigi as they traverse the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue Princess Toadstool from King Koopa, aka Bowser.
