Student athletes are geared up and ready for the start of the new season on the fields, courts and gridiron across York County.
“What we do here goes beyond video games,” said Neftali Perez, who coaches Harrisburg Community College’s cross country team, which features many students in York County.
Perez said the group was initially started because of the COVID-19 pandemic — because many students were isolated and had little to do. But it helps many students learn the skills they need in the real world.
“Most sports teams don’t do anything,” said Perez, himself an athlete and a college administrator. “We are trying to think of a way to gather students, to find a place to go.”

Esports, a form of competition where participants play against each other in video games, is on the rise in the United States and around the world. This includes broadcasting Overwatch, a multiplayer first-person shooter, on ESPN and introducing tournaments where cash prizes are available, such as the Evolution Championship series.
Players on the HACC carrier team can choose which sports to compete in. Overwatch involves players working together to achieve goals using pre-made characters. The game, published by Blizzard Entertainment, is very popular, which leads to a sequel that will be released this year.
“I was excited about the game and wanted to strategize,” said Overwatch player Azeria Lloyd of Spring Grove.
Lloyd said she has been playing Overwatch for a year after its release in 2016.
“I tried it at a friend’s house and I was really interested, but I’m not much into first-person shooters,” Lloyd said.
She got Gary Lilly, also of Spring Grove, involved. The two often watch overwatch expert Stylosa, who will keep track of the latest changes in the game and how to take advantage of them.
Lloyd is best played as a support like Moira or Mercy, who can deal damage to opposing players but focus on healing their teammates.

Other roles in Overwatch include tank, for players who deal damage to their teammates, and offense, for players who focus on destroying the enemy team.
It is part of the National Football Association (NJCEA), which hosts two-year college sports. According to NJCAA transportation director Matthew King, the league began sponsoring transportation in 2019.
“The NJCAA’s 2019 rollout began because NJCAA members are developing athletic teams and seeking grants focused on two-year and community college space,” King said.
Since the start of the competition, the competition has grown from 12 participating schools to 131, with many more colleges planning to participate in the future.
Increasingly, graduation is becoming a part of student life. Indeed, it has spread beyond university campuses to primary schools. According to the Association of State High School Associations, more than 8,600 high schools reported having video game teams as of last year.
That makes sense, given the show’s popularity.
According to the Pew Research Center, almost 90% of teenagers play video games.
Perez said the college plays against other two-year colleges in its league.
“If you think about it, it’s not going to be good if you have a team that’s been playing together for six years, the chemistry of that team is going to be a lot better if they’re going to play against a team that’s only been together for two semesters.” said Perez.
Jonathan Cunnings, of York City, who recently switched to computer science from psychology, said activities include getting together to play games and debating other groups.
For once, the Hawks have had exceptional success with a coach who specializes in both Overwatch and Valorant, a multiplayer game.
“It was a good experience,” Perez said.

The students who competed in Overwatch had the opportunity to learn from Aramori, a professional Overwatch player, by winning side competitions.
“In just a few days, I feel like I’ve learned a lot,” Lloyd said.
This includes learning how to progress through the game map in ways that the other team may not expect to prevent early damage and conserve resources.
Lilly generally plays the damage role on the team. He said he hopes to continue playing Overwatch after his time at HACC is over.
The upcoming release of Overwatch 2, the sequel to the original game, is expected to shake things up for the team. Set for release in October, the release will have a big impact on the competitive scene, including HACC.
“I hope that when it’s released, it’s still as fun and exciting as Overwatch was,” Lilly said.
Students must be registered as full-time students and must maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher to participate in the competition. They cannot fail any class and must submit a certificate.
Perez said that one of his priorities in the team is to make sure that there is no poison among his players. The social aspect – and the collaborative, goal-oriented nature of the sport – may not allow many students to develop their social and academic skills.
“Ultimately,” he said, “the whole goal of this is for them to do well in their studies and go out into the world with a good education to be successful.”
The Hawks play every week. In the three seasons it has played so far, the team has had at least one team or player in the series of games to be played in their league.
Cunnings said he will likely continue playing once his time at HACC is up, but it won’t be the same.
“One of the best things is playing with these guys,” he said, “and as much as I want to play later, I don’t know. You have to have that part of the team.”
