Readers explain how he acknowledged and overcame his alcohol problem and the positive role video games played in his life.

I am not an alcoholic by definition, but this is a very heavy drinker. Most of my adult life has revolved around drinking and always drinking too much. I have always gamed; drinking and games have gone hand in hand. Turn on my console, open a tinnie. The longer I play the more I drink. Not a good recipe for success. So in the next few paragraphs I will share my experience and how it changed getting sober. I promise not to be an evangelist.

I don’t have a regular job. I run my own business, which has periods of intense work and periods of nothingness. This is the nature of the sector I work in. I work away from home a lot and always take a console or another way to game on while sitting in the hotel room, in the hope that it discourages me from spending time at the bar. It was a theory but to tell the truth it never made a difference. I’ll have a few pints with my dinner and it’ll put the game on hold.

I will concentrate now on typical evenings and weekends after. This is during the quiet season. I never behaved like this when work was involved, I have always been able to show restraint, but I will still drink, as stated before.

I usually turn on around 7pm and start drinking. I usually play single-player games during the week. I don’t have a favorite genre so what takes my fancy. I will play through the evening, making progress like any normal gamer, but slowly but surely as the drink flows it will reduce until I get to a wall. Usually it’s because a little skill or quick reaction is involved and it gets shot down with beer. At that point I will turn off and continue some mindless game that does not require any great skill or thought. Cricket 22 is a recent favourite. When it started to fail at some point, I would go to bed with a sigh.

The next night will be a repeat process but with a few changes. I don’t know what’s going on with the story and the long-forgotten new button combinations. A few nights later, the game will be put on the back burner and it’s off to something else. Rinse and repeat.

The weekends were a little different. This is usually a time to meet up online with my best mate for some multiplayer action. I would still go on around 7pm and he would come on around 8pm, after putting his kids to bed. We still like to play PUBG and have been putting in days and days of playing – with very little success on the chicken dinner front.

That doesn’t mean we are bad players. Let me challenge that my mate is a good player, with a respectable kill/death ratio and many victories under his belt. He is just completely disabled by my drunken inability to do anything beyond the point. The K/D ratio is shocking. My success rate is an absolute joke. I’m that inept he won’t let me drive the vehicle! He would usually finish our game together at 10pm, saying he had to go and do something. I’ll go and follow the weekday routine and we’ll see how that goes.

On August 5th I took control of my life and stopped drinking. Not just some time off or only on weekends or special events. Full on no more. The biggest reason is for my physical health and mental health, which I have written here before, but I want my hobby back. I want to get back to enjoying, rising to challenges, beating tough games and not wasting my time on rubbish like Cricket 22! Cricket does not break 22.

I have written a feature in the past about the difficult game but how much is affected by my drinking and not the game? Only time will tell when I will go back and see some more clear minded people. Maybe I won’t find the Soulslike game so difficult after all. It can push a little!

As you read this you may be thinking it’s only been a few weeks on the wagon but already, I’m seeing positive changes. My best mate now stays with me much later. He said it’s not because I’m sober now but secretly, I think it is. My game is more enjoyable, I make a lot of progress and can remember things. These are the things that keep me motivated.

Just to show how things have changed. We were invited to the pub with friends at lunchtime, followed by a drink in their garden. We left at 4pm. In your days, I would be well cut and in no fit condition for an evening game. Not today, I came home, and in the evening fired the console for four hours of positive games. Sorry, I can’t write a whole article without a little evangelism!

I have given up one thing and got so much more.

PS: Thanks to my wife and best partner for the support they show me. I love you both.
