Yakuza: Judgement
This is more of a spin-off from the Yakuza games, so many don’t consider it a true part of the series. But it takes place in absolutely the same world and general location as the rest of the games. You play detective Takayuki Yagami as he investigates a series of crimes in the city. This brings him into contact with a number of Yakuza members throughout his investigation. Good writing, solid combat, and a well-crafted sense of mystery make this a fantastic addition to the franchise, even if it’s a bit annoying to be on the other side of the law this time around.
Yakuza Kiwami
This game and its sequel, Kiwami 2, are remakes of the first and second games in the series. But Kiwami is much more than just a one-for-one remake of a previous game. This game is an evolution of a pretty good previous game, which not only improves the technical aspects of the game, but also the plot. Characters who were one-dimensional before becoming their own individual and lackluster crime drama transforms into a captivating story of finding your way back into the world.
Yakuza Kiwami 2
Despite being a “two”, it is perfectly enjoyed as a stand-alone game. It’s also a new version of Yakuza 2 that uses the Dragon Engine, making for a smoother and more refined game. It takes a game that everyone agreed was pretty good and brought it up to a more modern standard. But it’s also not completely re-hashed and redone. Yakuza: Like a Dragon
I know this is not the most popular Yakuza game. I know it’s different from the rest of the Yakuza series both in tone and design. But I really think this is one of the funniest games ever made. Unlike the rest of the series, it’s turn-based, and the sheer ridiculousness of the side quests, classes, and battle outfits makes me wonder if 90% of everything in this game happens in your character’s head. On the same subject : Roger Ebert against video games. At one point you become president of the most powerful corporation in the country and then you try not to fall asleep to art movies playing DDR controller while the REM-Rams try to lull you to sleep. I recognize that all this may seem silly. Forks. But it’s also one of the most fun and different games I’ve come across.
